My uncle passed away peacefully in his sleep yesterday afternoon around 2PM. He was 99 years, 9 months and a few days young and lived a great life. We were all planning his 100th birthday for December 23rd. He was a native American born in Fort Wayne, IN and moved to Canada when he was 18. He joined the Navy and served in WW2 on an oiler in the north Atlantic refueling the convoy ships between Halifax and Europe. He never talked about it very much but there are a few photos that we have that were taken during some of those trips. He spent the last 22 years in the Veteran's Hospital in Halifax after suffering a stroke but was mobile and active up until a few weeks ago terrorizing the nurses in his motorized wheelchair. Every trip back to Canada since 1991 I've always gone to visit him and we've had great chats - a great sense of humor, and lots of good stories. I'm going to miss him - he always called me 'young feller' and I am going to raise a glass in his memory tonight. Thanks for listening.

Those relationships are so valuable in ones life. It is hard to quantify. But what a blessing they are. Sorry but it sounds like a great opportunity to give thanks for him. And like you mention. Celebrate his life. You are lucky to have had him as your uncle. "Practice like you want to play in the game"

He might have refueled one of the merchant ships Father sailed on during the war. Godspeed, sir. Nice is overrated "It's every freedom-loving individual's duty to lie to the government." Airsoftguy, June 29, 2018

Sorry for your loss. This thread made me do the math that while we still have some of the greatest generation with us, their numbers are dwindling down. "It did not really matter what we expected from life, but rather what life expected from us. We needed to stop asking about the meaning of life, and instead to think of ourselves as those who were being questioned by life – daily and hourly. Our answer must consist not in talk and meditation, but in right action and in right conduct. Life ultimately means taking the responsibility to find the right answer to its problems and to fulfill the tasks which it constantly sets for each individual." Viktor Frankl, Man's Search for Meaning, 1946.

My sincere condolences. Cherish the memories. “Our actions may be impeded... But there can be no impeding our intentions or our dispositions. Because we can accommodate and adapt. The mind adapts and converts to its own purposes the obstacle to our acting. The impeding to action advances action. What stands in the way becomes the way.” ― Marcus Aurelius

Cheers to your uncle, and condolences to you. The fish is mute, expressionless. The fish doesn't think because the fish knows everything.

Heres to a good run. Please, if you do not mind, post his name so we can raise a glass. Even just a first.

I had 6 Uncles from the WW2 Vet group. Dad too. Dad spent his days inseminating cows, and doctoring ship loads of mules going to China. All gone. And missed. Only one family member left of that generation. My Mother. Just turned 100 in September.... SIGnature NRA Benefactor CMP Pistol Distinguished

I am sorry for your loss. Even when they do grow old, “they shall not grow old”, as in Lieutenant-Colonel John McCrae’s famous eulogy. No better men than them shall we ever see, I’m afraid.
