As if the weather and cancelled flight weren’t enough. JP Chase is also having a conference which means hotels are 600+ a night.

And our hosts mentioned that if we took the BART (public transit) they would offer armed escort LMAO.

Glad I can’t carry Roll Eyes

If the amount of human feces hasn’t decreased since I last visited SF I’d argue this trip qualifies for hazard pay.

Let me know if they still have "medical emergencies" on Bart just before entering Embarcadero Station.

In the months I used it to travel to SF for a job years ago they had one every single day, no exceptions.

FLASH,

I'm gonna rent a small car, we've been advised to leave it empty with windows cracked and doors unlocked due to rampant theft in the area.

I'll use UBER for our evening social events...

It's a GD shame. I'm preparing like I'm going to Libya or Columbia for work.

I’m genuinely curious- I wonder what would happen to someone that waited nearby their car, and, shall we say, physically discouraged a break in attempt with somewhat extreme prejudice. Is San Francisco so far gone that such a person would run more afoul of the law than the perp?

I can guarantee you that I will not, being a rental, take the whole GD thing.

I know that's not what you're asking, but the Agency can pay for that rental being stolen as far as I'm concerned. Got not dog in the fight.

You won't have to worry about feces on the sidewalks, buy maybe cholera Big Grin

From last week:

The Bay Area is experiencing storms and heavy rains, and it is supposed to continue this week. It seems they can't handle heavy rains very well, the infrastructure seemingly fails when the rain level goes above an inch. My friend in the Bay Area says that it is just a shitstorm, so many weather related problems.

Check the weather reports.

It sounds like you're driving from the East Bay to SF. Be advised that unless you have enough people to drive in the carpool lane (2) then you won't believe how long it will take to get through the toll area prior to the bridge.

And I'd leave the car unlocked if it were me and yes, leave nothing in it, not even a pair of cheap sunglasses. They'll steal anything.

Those tended to be passengers getting "panic attacks" when the train stopped in the tube for any extended period of time.

Then you have the "Major Medical Emergencies" which is normally a person in the trackway.

Smashing good fun down there. Be sure to visit the Tenderloin, and leave your car unlocked. Won't matter if you lock it anyway. Also, feel free to steal up to 900 dollars worth of whatever. The makeup isle at CVS seems to be all the rage. Bathrooms optional. Enjoy your trip.

We went fast from the time we entered the tube until just about 100 yards short of the station, then stopped and they declared the emergency...every day I rode BART which wasn't every day but a lot of days. The domino effect would back up trains all the way down the tube to the East Bay when this happened I'm sure because it had to with the frequency they were running trains.

And I was always on the same train, one that arrived at Embarcadero station at 8AM, so it always happened to the same train.

Strange stuff.

DO you really need to rent a car?
Besides rentals being outrageously priced (expensing it?) and the daily parking fee's at downtown hotels being crazy high, the break-in's are out of control. There's not a neighborhood that is immune from all the vehicle vandalism.

If you can avoid it and just use a car share, I'd do that, even if you're driving in from OAK into SF. BART continues to be a mess, ridership is waay down thus, resources for LEO patrols are reduced, the amount of criminal mischief and vandalism continues to be excused by civic managers. Alameda Country just elected a far-left DA (didn't learn from SF's recall) so, standby if you're in the East Bay.

Oh and if you haven't heard, bring your rain gear...it's been rather wet lately.

Very likely, particularly if you're of the 'wrong' racial & economic background
Despite the recall of the previous DA, who was quite pro-crime/victim, and even if you're in the right in your use of force, you would likely have to deal with an onslaught of negative media whipped-up by various city figures, a variety of civil suits against you, encouraged by city govt and the various victim non-profits that receive govt grants, and you'll never get your property back unless you have a deep legal fund. The perp would have to be a criminal with a lengthy record that there could be no doubt, however you'd have to weather the storm first.

Do leave nothing in the car. Anything seen is an invitation to theft. Don't transfer things to the trunk in plain sight. That laptop bag you just stashed is a target.

Do not leave the doors unlocked. An unlocked door is an invitation to sleep, shoot up, or fornicate in your car.

Parking garages and staffed lots are better options than the street.

The recent storms washed away some grime. More rain starting tonight.

You're smart. You know how the world works. You shouldn't have any problems.

I found the Walnut Creek Bart station to be cleanish and well managed…..if you’re staying in the Bay Area. There’s a Marriott next door.

The place sounds like Somalia.

I haven't been there in probably ten years or so, but back then it was just your typical filthy big city. Guess I won't be going back.

I wonder if The Stinking Rose is still open.

I hope so, The Stinking Rose was great. Then again, it’s been a lot more than ten years for me. Too many good memories to screw them up by seeing the current state of the City.

They reopened one block away from their former location after being closed for all of 2021; being a restaurant or, any small business in the city was brutal, city/state government did them no favors. They had shrunk their space prior and the owners spent much of '21 trying to sell the business. A novelty menu, it's a reliable spot to bring out-of-towners and while it isn't going to gain any culinary awards, it's actually isn't too bad for a unique experience.
