yes and only when it doesn't allow Face Recognition such as after an update.

If your phone has face recognition, you should enable and use that, works great, no entering a code that other people could figure out watching when you enter it...

Even if you have Face ID set up, iOS occasionally requires you to enter the unlock code to reduce the likelihood of you forgetting it.

Make sure you keep a record of your pass codes. Apple may require you to enter a prior passcode.

“To change your lock screen password, open Settings, tap Face ID & Passcode (or Touch ID & Passcode), enter your current passcode, and select Change Passcode. Enter your current passcode one more time, then type your new password. You can tap Passcode Options to choose a 4-digit, custom numeric, or alphanumeric code.”

Not interested in face id for obvious reasons. If you do, more power to you.

In all seriousness, why? My employer is ultra security conscious and is fine using company phones with facial recognition in most of world. Only exceptions are communist countries they have us turn off facial ID before boarding the plane.

In my case, I have a face made for radio.

Government authorities can use fingerprint or facial ID to unlock your phone without violating the 4A. They cannot force you to provide the numeric lock code. In reference to a traffic stop, Terry Stop, etc.

Per tv shows, when the villain kills you they can still access your phone by using your face to get the top secret files on it. Probably not a concern for most of us, lol.

Settings > Display & Brightness > Auto-Lock. There you set how long the phone display will stay on and the phone unlocked if you don't touch anything. This setting is mis-named. It isn't Auto-LOCK, it's Auto-DARK SCREEN. The screen may not be locked yet. In my case, my screen goes dark as soon as I press the power button, or the Auto-Lock time expires without touching the phone. This saves battery. Then when I lift the phone or tap the screen, the screen-saver photo appears. None of this means the phone is locked. This setting is really to save power by taking away screen illumination after the amount of time you set. See the next item below.

Settings > Face ID & Passcode > Require Passcode.
Set this to Immediately so that as soon as the screen locks you need to use the code. Anything longer than Immediately means the phone isn't actually locked until that time elapses. It will show the dark screen but it isn't locked yet. You merely swipe up and it opens up. You want the phone to be locked as soon as it is in the dark screen, either when you've pressed the Power button or the "Auto-Lock" time elapses without you touching the screen.

While you're still in Face ID & Passcode, I strongly recommend scrolling down to the Allow Access When Locked section at the bottom. Turn OFF both Control Center and SIRI. When a thief grabs your locked phone, they try to immediately put it in airplane mode so that the owner cannot use Find My Phone and cannot put it into a locked Lost Mode, or remotely erase it. When you're in lock mode, you can still scroll down from the top right and get the Control Center. There you (or the thief) can select airplane mode and turn off WiFi. You need to disable this! Also, disable SIRI in that list. A thief likewise can press the power button to bring up SIRI and tell her to put the phone into Airplane Mode. So disable SIRI in that list.

Note that the Stolen Device Protection feature cannot be activated without FaceID. With FaceID it can require your passcode be entered to unlock under some scenarios. I don't use FaceID so I don't have this feature and don't fully know what it provides.

iPhone 17 even when turned OFF still has Find My activated for 24 hours. So if a thief grabs your phone and turns it off, you can still track it for 24 hours. Great if you lose it or it gets stolen. Bad if you want to not be tracked and thought you could just turn it off to accomplish that.

I assessed the benefits and risks of using Face ID. In my case the scales tilted strongly towards benefits.

As I said. More power to ya.

Bothers me a little that others could use my face to unlock my phone against my desire, but not enough to not use it.

Let's say you are driving with your wife. A text comes in from one of the kids, or a phone call. The wife deals with it. Then you get pulled over for some reason and the officer asks for your phone.

If he sees the timestamp on the call or text it is evidence you were driving while distracted.

It is no different than a cop wanting to look around inside your home or have you pop the car trunk open voluntarily. Why enable a fishing expedition that delays you and provides opportunity for any innocent thing to be misconstrued as evidence of wrongdoing?
