What is it about hurricane news conferences, that attracts the hard of hearing, requiring the services of professional signers, most of whom, appear to be auditioning for Saturday Night Live? I can only surmise there is some connection with the tornado/trailer park phenomenon.

The wind whipping thru the trailer is making it impossible to hear the TV so the only option is to watch the sign language guy?

It is required by law. Reference ADA. What you are seeing is a type of sign language that also utilizes overexaggerated facial expression to communicate the threat.

Your remark could be considered at best politically insensitive. The United States has a very large deaf community some of which are members of this forum.

It will be very interesting to see if they try to pull off any fake situations like they got caught doing during the last one

maybe they need to add sign language in Spanish as well.

I heard there were a lot of migrant workers that were not specifically told to evacuate for Florence.

didn't pay full attention to the new release, not sure who they are blaming.

I was watching one today and the news station had a banner thing covers 75% of the person doing the sign language part. Lots of good it does when the news stations cover it up with a banner thing.

Cannot read. You would be surprised by the number of individuals in this country who are illiterate. Or maybe not. Closed captioning sucks by the way. The major networks have a human being, the others often use something like dragon speak.

English is my wife's second language, ASL is her first as she is the Child of Deaf Adult (CODA).

The deaf community uses a lot of facial expressions to get across what the hearing world is saying. They (the deaf) use a very conceptual language. With that said and after seeing my wife sign with deaf persons and work as an interpreter; if a person is just standing there only moving their hands and with a blank look on their face, they're not that good. Wink

Thank you for posting that. I think that there are a lot of people who have very little awareness of the deaf community. Although not hearing impaired myself, I have employed interpreters who are fluent in ASL in my work.

Did you read the article? It's all in good fun.

Hedley Lamarr: Sorry, I just remembered . . . I am armed.
