WalMart in Oregon stopped selling firearms and ammo

I shop at WalMart rarely, I'm afraid if I open up a "WalMart Shoppers" thread I will see a picture of me. Today I decided to stop and check on shotgun ammo. The locked ammo cabinet was empty, there were no firearms displayed. I asked a sales clerk what was going on, he said a court decision that refusing to sell firearms to the 18-20 year old age bracket was illegal under the Oregon Constitution. As a result of that decision Walmart will not be selling any firearms or ammo in Oregon.

Anyone have more info on this?

I do not get your explanation of why they decided to not sell them? What is the correlation to what court decision and them deciding to not sell them?

Sounds to me like Bi-mart has kicked their tale to the point of why bother.

Wally has been cutting back on firearms and ammo sales for a number of years. It was 2-3 years ago they indicated they would no longer sell ammo in military calibers or handgun ammo. ( obviously not brain surgeons here, as while they stopped selling 223 and similar ammo, 308 Winchester or 30/06 is still stocked in many stores and certainly are military calibers)
The more blue an area is the more likely they no longer stock guns or ammo in those stores. Nothing to do with court decisions or law. Much more a business decision.
In many areas with multiple stores in close proximity they leave only one store stocking guns/ ammo.
I live within a short drive of 4 Walmart’s in a very red area. They all continue to stock guns and ammo, not that it matters. For well over a year the shelves have been near empty at all locations with only a few odd ball calibers on the shelf.
Once in a blue moon I will find limited 22 rimfire in stock usually with a one or two box purchase limit.

It sounds like Walmart wanted to not sell firearms to adults under 21. Apparently that is considered age discrimination under the Oregon constitution. Sounds like Walmart’s solution was to simply stop selling guns and ammo. That is apparently a legal way to stop selling guns to adults under 21.

PORTLAND, Ore. (KATU) — Walmart stores in Oregon have stopped selling guns and ammunition, the nationwide retail chain said.

The company did not specify what prompted the decision.

In a statement released to KATU News, a Walmart spokesperson said:

We are proud to serve hunters and outdoorsmen and women and will continue to serve them with an assortment that reflects our heritage of supporting hunting and outdoor sports.

Earlier this year, the Oregon Court of Appeals has reversed a lower court's decision to throw out an age discrimination lawsuit against Bi-Mart, declaring it illegal to deny gun sales to buyers between the ages of 18 and 20.

Eugene-based Bi-Mart had announced in 2018 it would no longer sell guns and ammunition to people under the age of 21. Companies like Walmart and Dick's Sporting Goods made similar changes around the same time after 17 students and staff members were killed in a school shooting in Parkland, Florida.

The progression was slow for Walmart, but steady. It started in about 95
when they stopped selling handguns. Locally, they sell no ammo that can be used in a handgun, in theory. In practice, they still sell 22LR and 410. Either way, I won't enter their Sporting Goods section. In truth, I buy cat litter and eyeglasses there, that's it. The optician service as independent anyway.

I think one of the Rogue's (Roguejsk maybe, if I spelled his signame correct) post a link to a website that would show you which stores were closing out and the prices,

they sold some nice stuff for stupid cheap pricing,

On the other hand, BiMart said they were gonna stop selling handguns and a couple years later the pistol cabinet is still full.

Same here (N Houston, not Harris cty)
Think there were a couple boxes of 12ga & an extremely small amount of rifle ammo. Long guns have been gone a while.

I had a friend that used to work at the sporting goods section of Walmart and he told me that it was a stupid decision of theirs to stop selling certain firearms and ammo. He said that these were the big money makers for the store. He was not the only one that said that as another Walmart employee also told me that from another location. Oh well I guess they caved to the liberals. God Bless

Same here about 2-3 years ago. Walmart slowly phased out certain ammo calibers and shortly there after all ammo and weapons were gone.

I did not bother asking why because an answer either way would not matter. The stuff was not coming back.

Did I shop for other things at Walmart ? Yes, I did and now I don't.

Totally lost my business.
