Howdy friends. I posted in another thread about protein powder but my question wasn’t exactly appropriate to the original context of the thread.

I’ve been using Bulletproof Collagen protein (unflavored) but I’m looking for something a little more substantial to help grow muscles. However, I don’t want stuff with garbage in it such as:
  • seed oils
  • corn syrup solids
  • sucralose
  • stevia
  • soy
  • maltodextrin
  • aspartame
  • acesulfame potassium
  • et al.

For the first time in my life I’m actually gaining muscle (I’m historically a “hard gainer”) and I’m eating properly and most of this stuff just doesn’t fit into my diet. Any suggestions? I don’t care what it tastes like. Seems like everything available has garbage in it.

Short of pure, 100%, unflavored whey protein, I don't think you're going to find anything meeting your criteria.

Nothing I'm using, or have used, meets it, so I've no recommendations for you.

However: I have lost eight pounds of net weight and ten pounds of body fat since the beginning of November, and I just started progressive overload weight training about two weeks ago, so I'd say what I've been using works. For me, anyway.

I’ve actually been gaining weight. I’m up to 207 at 6’1”. The shirts are getting tight around the shoulders and chest.

I’d like to actually find some unflavored whey but so far nothing at GNC or Sam’s.

Perhaps you needed to. I don't know your specific situation.

In my case I'd fallen completely off my exercise regimen and taken to eating poorly--portion sizes too large and way too much snacking. I had developed a fairly significant "beer belly" and my 36 in. waist jeans were becoming marginal.

So I needed to lose fat and gain lean body mass.

At the time I retired I weighed seven pounds more than I do now and had fifteen percent body fat.

Yes, the weight gain is intentional. I’m hoping to get up to around 215 and then learn how to lean out.

That and Nutricost Grass-Fed Whey Protein Isolate (Unflavored) lead the ConsumerLab tests for amount of protein/serving.

They're a bit on the spendy side, though, running about $1.67/serving or more.

As I mentioned in the other thread, I switched from a whey based protein powder to a veggie based one. It's called Complete and made by the Juice Plus people.

This company makes some great products, some of which I use. Here is a link for their unflavored whey, and they also have a choc. and vanilla. Their products that I have personally used are top notch. Other than being a customer I am not affiliated with them.

A low carb or keto or even a carnivore diet naturally keeps you satiated and you don't have a desire to snack.
I bought a lot of "keto snacks" when I first started ten months ago - still have many of them.
Additionally the visceral fat or that surrounding your organs in the belly are particularly unhealthy as opposed to fat just under the skin.
Fatty liver (an actual term) can be improved with low carbohydrate consumption.

FWIW, portion control is not generally effective anyway - typically those starvation diets fail miserably.
Been there, done that and I did the same thing - portion control, ramped up exercise, ate low fat >> does not work.
Basically it helped me dramatically in the gut size area.

YMMV

Yes, I'm aware of that.

By "portion control" I mean not over-eating. I'm certainly not doing a starvation-mode diet. Can't gain lean body mass doing that, even were I inclined to do it.

Having gotten down to the lowest net weight I've been in 10-15 years: Two weeks ago I increased my protein consumption at the same time I began increasing my strength training intensity. Now I've backed-off the cardio intensity a bit and am headed for progressive overload strength training. (At my age I have to be careful with my joints, tendons, ligaments, and back, so I'm approaching that incrementally.)

I don't worry overmuch about fat content. There's certainly not much in my protein supplements and my wife is very conscious of what goes into the meals she prepares.

I am, however, paying close attention to carbs--particularly simple and refined carbs.

mark123, you might like Fa!rlife Core Power Protein Milk Shakes. Very tasty, good macros, and made from simple, natural ingredients. Spendy, though.

I was hopeful but they’ve got stevia in them. It gives me a terrible headache.

This product has no sugars and no carbs.

https://fortifeye.com/product/...fed-whey-isolate-dr/

Fortifeye Vitamins researches and develops the latest in Grass Fed Whey Protein Isolate.

Fortifeye Grass Fed Whey Isolate is a non-denatured whey protein isolate under the Fortifeye Performance Nutrition label. It is one of the only unflavored, unbleached, undenatured, grass fed, UK cows, micro filtered / ultra-filtered, cold pasteurized whey protein isolates available. The process of purification, concentration and pasteurization keeps the delicate proteins and amino acids intact and very bioavailable. The milk has gone thru a cold pasteurization process using 72 degrees Celsius for only 15 seconds this keeps the protein bioavailability and immune boosting properties at the highest level possible. Ultra and micro filtration is used to eliminate fat, cholesterol, casein and lactose without denaturing the protein. Most protein isolates you buy today are from cows fed growth hormone, GMO grain, antibiotics and then pasteurized under high heat for extended periods of time and then acid is used that further denatures the protein and the immune properties. Fortifeye Grass Fed Whey Isolate uses the highest quality milk and the very latest most natural technology in the formulation process that preserves the bio availability of the proteins and the immune building properties. This protein isolate mixes very easily and completely in a shaker cup and there is no need to use a blender. Fortifeye Grass Fed Whey protein can be used alone or for maximum nutritional support for muscle synthesis should be added to Fortifeye Fit as the ultimate muscle fuel. This protein has zero carbohydrates and zero sugar so perfect for keto or low carb diets!
