I second the Goal Zero line. They have a variety of components that you could put together to suit your needs.

Thanks for the responses. So, I see that power banks are the way store energy from the solar panel, and these power banks have a variety of connectors which allow you to run various devices directly from the bank, or instead charge devices.

That's a good system but I do want to be able to charge D batteries. There's got to be a way.

I have a battery charger that charges AAA to D cells. Model BT-C2000 Version 2.2. Manufactued by Opus Instruments Co. I purchased it on Amazon. 12v input 1.0 amp draw from a battery pack.

I got the solar kit with the second panel. I have really used the fan with the switch 10 bank for camping, baseball game in summer heat, etc and glad I did. Nitecore makes some nice chargers I have a couple of the USB chargers but only go up to C cell) and they show a charger for up to D cell but I couldn’t tell if it was USB charging or 120V. May look at those and send an email to Customer service to find out if it’s USB. If so, the Goal Zero or Anker charging panels would work well.

I prefer Anker for my solar panels. There was a thread 3 years back that posted all the math on devices and aeteocles helped me thru selection of devices.

I also did a follow up post to my results of only using solar on my trip to mexico keeping 3 phones a tablet and kindle charged the whole 10 days.

Never used these batteries but u want USB rechsrgable Ds and it should work with any solar panels with a usb port.

If it's for the house, and you don't have to carry it, a deep cycle battery stores a lot of energy and makes a great power pack. Then you can run an inverter off of it to charge all kinds of things. I have several old lawn tractor and boat batteries in the garage for this purpose. Even an old battery holds a ton of power.

And the solar panel and a charge controller can keep them charged. Or the more compact portable batteries.

Last I looked, the sheer amount of time it takes to recharge a phone battery from dead to 100% or to (re)charge AAs/AAAs was super long, making these portable solar panels a tool of last resort.

What are the real-world times you guys who have them are seeing?

I never directly charge off them but rather fill up a portable powerbank alomg the way then charge from that.

It takes about 4 hours on a non perfect day for 3200 mah battery (iphone plus). In perfect direct sunlight about half. You are correct in that it is not like having an outlet aroud. But if you have a several days event you can keep your devices charged over time making the panels useful a real shtf situation. Will dropping it on your backup while hiking save ya, no. Will it be worth it if the power is out for a week or you go on a remote trip with no electricity, yes, if you match it with a powerbank.

Or just buy the anker 500$ ppwer bank thats like 100,000mah and runs a portable cpap for 4 days and has 26 iphone charges in it!

If you have a Harbor Freight nearby, they have several sizes of solar panels for various tasks. I have a small one from there and it will charge my phone pretty quickly. But you have to keep them in bright sun - no shade or shadows - or charging will low to a stop. Mine has a build in USB jack.

Another option to consider, depending on the particulars of your situation is it use a 12 volt charger that you can plug into your car/truck to quickly charge your device/batteries.

I have one I can use to charge my 20v cordless drill and it works well.

Also many newer trucks and cars have 120v plugs...
