Above average Android users, which SMS app to replace Signal? Login/Join

I've been using Signal and the encryption between Signal users is a nice to have, but Signal is losing SMS support so now I'm going to switch. I wish I could have everyone in my phone start using Signal, but that will never happen and I don't understand why Signal has made this decision as I suspect they are going to lose a large portion of their users.

What SMS apps do yall use?

ETA: Encryption is a nice to have, but not neccessary.

Signal never had SMS/MMS support for Apple's iOS or iPadOS in the first place. I never really regarded it as a problem. I use Signal for those that have it and the native iOS/iPadOS for those who do not.

Not certain I see the problem.

I'm not going to keep track of who's on Signal and who is not. That's the problem.

If they aren’t on Signal, I just use the stock message app.

Not sure I understand. Is Signal some type of messaging app that is supposedly secure and no one can see but other users?
I've been Android since the beginning but I send nothing over my phone that could be used against me. I'll talk FTF if it's something delicate.

I'd rather be hated for who I am than loved for who I'm not.

Agreed I will never check in Signal 1st.
I will probably stop using Signal except when messaging with my wife.

I'm going to use the Messages by Google from the play store.

Yes, and there's no "supposedly" about it--it is secure.

I'm also bummed about the loss of SMS support, I now use it along side the native google SMS app the only app that could replace it is Whatsapp. they claims to be encrypted but I don't trust Meta(facebook).

I wouldn't ditch signal. Just allow it to notify you. I get a notice on my watch and my phone whenever I get a message on signal. I've got a core group of about 5 people who use it, and everyone else, doesn't. It isn't that big of a deal to me.

That said, I'm all ears to a better option if there is one to be found.

I sure like the ability to layer up on security with signal for communicating on a device that is guaranteed to be monitored already.

I really like Signal for my iPhone, but man!! It can sure drain my battery if I leave the Notification on because it’s CONTINUALLY updating.

Anyone have a solution for that?? I’d like to use it in lieu of texting.

I have never noticed that, erj_pilot, and I've had Signal installed since Day 1 with my iPhone.

<looks...> In the current drain cycle it's taking 12%. Beating it:

Oticon ON (hearing aids): 22%
Mail: 17% (2 accounts)
AccuWeather: 12%

If I have to send anything secure it's going encrypted email. Everything else is whatsapp. If Meta wants to search my chat history they'll be sorely disappointed when they find mostly pics and videos of beaches and food.
