Too soon old, too late smart |
We started out with steel cut oats, but cooking on the stove top takes a while and needs to be stirred. For the past year it’s been rolled oats zapped for 2 minutes in the microwave. We really prefer the steel cut oats and someone suggested soaking overnight. Bingo! For two generous servings, 3/4 cup of oats boiled in a little less than three cups of water for ONE minute then taken off the heat, covered and left alone all night will be ready for you to have your way with it. I place some frozen blueberries in the bottom of a bowl, give the oats a good stir then ladle the oats over the fruit and zap it for 2 minutes on high to thaw the fruit and warm the oats. We’re back in business. I bought a rice cooker thinking it would do the job with the steel cut oats, but got many Beancooker style messes before giving up.

Yeah, rice cooker method was a flop for me too. ____________________________ NRA Life Member, Annual Member GOA, MGO Annual Member

Yes if you don't have time in the morning that sounds like a good option. Fortunately I have the time. I use 3 - 1, boiling 1 cup water then adding 1/3 cup oats (along with cinnamon, raisons or dried fruit), cover, set to lowest heat and simmer for 20 minutes. I went through a phase where I just soaked my steel cut oats overnight in the fridge in milk, with a couple tsp of honey. Next morning I would eat them direct from the fridge, and developed a pretty good taste for them. Kept me full much longer than I initially expected, too. Were I not on a low carb intake right now, I would go back to them... ________________________________________________ "You cannot legislate the poor into freedom by legislating the wealthy out of freedom. The Instant Pot and steel-cut oatmeal were made for each other. 30 minutes (or even faster) total from box to bowl. No overnight soak times.

+1 for this method. Set the timer for when you want it ready, and you are good to go. --k

For porridge, I use oat groats from Bob’s Red Mill. Like rolled oats and steel-cut oats, oat groats are hulled and toasted, but nothing else is done to them – they’re just whole oat kernels. I cook ‘em in my pressure cooker. Fast, and no presoaking necessary. The porridge has an al dente character, which I like, a lot. www.amazon.com/dp/B01MCYDIKJ/r..._api_i_nnMiEbRFMQ6Z6 ETA: Usually 2-1/2 oz oat groats, 5 oz milk. V-Tail’s porridge (below) sounds rather thin to me. I like hearty porridge! This message has been edited. Last edited by: Pipe Smoker, Serious about crackers

I have no issue with the stovetop method for steel cut oats. a sliver of butter a scoop of oats to toast (Bob's) before burning, add water and bring to boil a pinch of salt turn heat down and let simmer for 20-min This is the routine at least twice a week. I like a bit of chew, will add brown sugar and nuts.

Only the strong survive |
I use the Aroma 8 cup rice cooker on the Brown Rice cycle which works fine for me. Add one apple diced, some raisins, and 3/8 cup Steel Cut oats with 1 cup water. Go surf Sigforum and in half an hour it is read...no stirring. https://www.walmart.com/ip/Aro...ker-Steamer/19756393 41

I buy mine 50 lbs at a time, I use them in breads in addition to breakfast, for me, it's 1/2 cup oats two cups water, pinch of cinnamon and raisins put in a few minutes before finished. I use a small heavy weight pot, once it comes to a boil, salt it add the oats, turn it down, jump in the shower. It's usually ready a few minutes after I get out. I cook with propane so adjusting the burner is fairly easy. _________________________ NRA Patron Life Member

I use the slow cooker function of the multi pot. Put the oats and water in at night, turn it on, let her rip, and it's ready in the morning. Easy peasy. I use one part steel cut oats to 3 1/2 parts or 4 parts water, add a bit of salt. הרחפת שלי מלאה בצלופחים

"Zojirushi rice cooker with the oatmeal setting works for me." I did this also when it was suggested in a previous thread a couple of years ago. Perfect oats every time. Thank you, Sigforum! "Cedat Fortuna Peritis"

Zojirushi rice cooker works beautifully and with absolute consistency for me also. I don't like the texture of steel-cut. Maybe it's my cook method but I prefer rolled oats "No matter where you go - there you are"

I really like steel cut oats, I have to say it, I think I like them better than Grits and by Grits I mean Real Grits.... not that white Jim Didley quick cook mess (the stuff in the paper package is not even close) but stone ground, non enhanced from yellow corn. But both I usually add some Cabots extra sharp cheddar to. My Native American Name: "Runs with Scissors"

I have seen the brand name "Zojirushi" quite a few times here on the forum, but never looked at any of their products. 83v45magna's post, above, prompted me to look at the product. I did a search for "Zojirushi" on Amazon and found some of the brand's products. Now, before you look at it, make sure that you are sitting in a very stable chair. Or, better yet, sit on the floor so that you don't have very far to fall. Here's the product. A device that will heat four liters (just a few ounces over one gallon) of water. Got that? Heat a gallon of water. That's it, just a water heater with a four liter capacity. The bargain price is ONLY $174.18, and if you order it right away, it will be delivered to you by Tuesday. https://smile.amazon.com/gp/pr...M4H6MZQNMSWY3CHWX79N הרחפת שלי מלאה בצלופחים

I can’t eat them anymore due to my low carb diet but I always used a slow cooker for steel cut oats. I’d put it on low before bed and they were perfect by morning.
