12GASwiss Army Knife or Leatherman
So I recently gave the boy my well worn Swiss Army knife as he was in great need so now I’m seeking a replacement. I really liked the various accessories the Swiss Army Knife contained but thought the blade could be improved. I also liked the way it fit on my belt without being cumbersome.

What say you? Should the always lovely Mrs 12GA give me a Leatherman or a Swiss Army Knife for my birthday ?LeathermanSwiss Army KnifeOther (please specify)

hudrIf the Swiss Army knife does what you need it to, and that is what you’re used to.....
Of course, the pliers on the leatherman, I find very handy from time to time.

eyrichI stopped carrying leathermen, gerbers, and swiss army knives for a Swiss Army Spirit 10 years ago or so.
Looks like the Spirit X is the current version.

arfmelSwiss Army knife has a far better knife
Leatherman has a far better pliers
I personally prefer the SAK.
You rather have a knife, or pliers?

bettysnephewI have a Gerber pocket tool much like the Leatherman, I liked the layout a little better and the knife was much better than the Leatherman. Not sure they still make them but take a look.

MRMATTI carry a SAK Tinker model at all times. It's what works for me. Just bought another two to give to give to my daughter's boys for Christmas gifts.

M1GarandyI EDC a Gerber multi-tool after wearing out/breaking 2-3 original Leaterman tools.
I personally use the pliers and other tools at least as much if not more than the knife blade so useful tools are a must for me.

sigproshooterI find a Leatherman too heavy/bulky for everyday pocket carry but always keep one in my glovebox or toss one in a bag if i take a trip somewhere. For EDC I would have to go with the Swiss Army Knife.

snideraI use the pliers on my LM Squirt almost daily. they're small enough to get into tight spots, but the right shape/design to grip really well. You're not going to break loose a stuck 1" bolt, but that's probably not what you need in your pocket all day.
I like the P4 better than the PS4 - they took out the small flat screw driver to add the scissors, which was my 2nd most used tool.

sigarms229I’d go with a Leatherman. It’s a better overall tool. I pocket carry a Leatherman Wingman daily.

BB61If you’re camping/hunting, I find the Swiss Army knife a better tool. If you need something to back you up at work, I’d do the Leatherman. I really, think they are two different tools for radically different purposes.

BamaJeepsterI carry a LM Skeletool daily. Does everything I need. Pliers, 2 flathead screwdriver tips, 2 Philips tips, knife, bottle opener - pretty much everything I need and it's light and handy.

Webley GreenAnd some of us carry both, Swiss Army knife in the pocket and gerber multi-pliers on belt since the early 90s. Before that, just the Swiss Army Knife in my pocket.

JJexpMy favorite swiss is the
Victorinox Atlas. It has decent pliers, and a good screwdriver.

Everything but the kitchen sink but a bit too thick for my likings.

AckksIt depends on what you are using it for. If you are in the woods a SAK is probably more useful. If you are working in an urban environment then go with a Leatherman. If you are worried about having tools with you on the go then put some in your trunk.
A few years ago someone on here suggested buying a SAK and a vise-grip and having the best of both worlds.

mikeyspizzaSwiss Army Knife hands down. But the real question is: Victorinox or Wenger?
December 23, 2017, 07:14 PM
12GAThanks for all the great advice. It would be for use at camp not around the home so sounds like another SAK will fit the bill.

I started out with a Victorinox and consequently prefer them. I've never had much success with Wenger's can opener.
