FBI already does NICS checks. ATF checks to make sure your NFA paperwork is correct when you file for any of that stuff, but currently the bottle neck with NFA submissions isn't the ATF, it's the FBI and their NICS department. customer submitted a form 4 almost 3 yrs ago,
2 yrs later he gets a letter from the ATF saying his payment is refunded, and form denied due to waiting on the FBI NICS check,
granted, he has bought firearms in that same time frame,
calls to FBI NICS did not help, nor did calls to NFA branch,
he was able to get a UPIN, and we refiled an E form 4. and he was approved in less than 30 days,

You need to target committee staffers. Find them on LinkedIn and their email addresses on the House side are firstname.lastname@house.gov. If your own Congress critter is one of the good ones, you can go to their district office and ask who their LA (legislative assistant) is for whichever topic - gov't. reform and oversight, judiciary, etc. Unless you personally know your Congress critter and/or are a campaign contributor, you have to go through staff.

Any enthusiasts who have completed more than a handful of legal, in-person private party transactions w/o going through an FFL could be made an example of - i.e., raided & killed - the way Malinowski was.

The ATF has been like this for some time; I had a buddy that was a class 3 dealer and solid conservative that applied to the ATF back in the early 90’s. He got as far as the interview where they asked him if he would essentially do what the agency instructed him to do in investigations. He replied “I’d do what is constitutional”. That was as far as he got in the hiring process.

The raid and murder were bad enough. But AFIK, they didn't even try to get him to show up at the local field office with his lawyer for questioning. He was the highest paid official in the local gov't. He wasn't selling guns because he needed the money or had been compromised. I have a close local friend who got the "warning letter" from ATF for too many private party sales without an FFL. But they did give him a time and date to appear with his lawyer, and he complied.
And IIRC, they put tape over Maliowski's doorbell camera, didn't wear body cams and were basically looking for a gun fight. It's too bad they didn't more of one.

supposedly the inspections are now based on number of traces the dealer gets, with a focus on dealers with a high number of traces,
I know one small shop that specializes in collectibles, antiques, etc (not a lot of new stuff ) that went 12 yrs between inspections

There was a smallish shop locally where in 26 years, besides the initial site visit, they never had an BATFE inspection.

Rick LeeThe guy I used to use for transfers before I got my FFL told me he'd had an inspection at his house last EIGHT HOURS and they found multiple violations. This FFL is also an LEO and a pretty straight arrow, so this story kind of scared me.

Rick LeeI applied for my 07 today, called my IOI with a few questions. He had no idea who I was. My intake interview was exactly two mos. ago, lasted three hours and he and I have spoken on the phone, texted and emailed a lot. He had no recollection of me at all. I'm getting the feeling these guys are spread thin and I won't be getting inspected anytime soon.

MikeinNC^^^ you probably won’t. My buddy only started getting inspected when he began getting trace requests. Once that happened and they found he had a few minor paperwork things, they began in earnest.
He began using their computer based logbook and the errors went away. But the inspections continued because of the traces. Seems nefarious naredowells in Wake county would have their gf drive over to another county and buy a gun, then give it to Ray-Ray who then got caught with it or the cops recovered it in a crime and traced it to his store. He eventually shut the place down about a year after I moved away.
