Hunting has been illegal in Kenya since 1977. No guns. All shooting done with cameras now.

The Kenyan natives are all friendly and most of them speak English (it's one of the 2 official languages of the country--the other is Swahili). I never felt in danger during the trip. Kenya is a stable country and there's not much terrorism there. Our accommodations were all very nice--we stayed in pretty upscale resorts and traveled in Toyota 4WD vehicles with open roofs (fabric covers). Our tour group was 20 persons plus a guide and we were assigned 5 to a vehicle (the guide rotated among the 4 vehicles in the front passenger seat). These vehicles were used for road travel and for the game drives, and the drivers were very savvy and helpful. Food? It was more fancy than I prefer and I didn't eat a lot as a result. Breakfast buffets were pretty much what you'd see in any European hotel. Their beef was tough, so I stayed with chicken and fish. There were native dishes, too, but I don't eat what I don't know what is (and a lot of what I do know what is). I would say the food was adequate and I'm sure that some of the group actually enjoyed it.

It was a very pleasurable experience and I'm glad I decided to do it. I had a few physical challenges but with some help of the guide, driver, and fellow travelers I made it through. I had wheelchair support in all the airports, and that was a BIG help! There is no way I could have coped with the airports without that assistance.

Holiday Vacations put together a fine tour and the guide was outstanding (female). My vehicle had the head driver and he was super.

One thing I discovered was that the paved roads (what we'd call highways) all had speed bumps every so often--across the highway! They were big enough that the vehicles had to slow to about 5 mph for them. The drivers knew where all of them were and so we coped with them OK, but if we'd hit any of them at even a slow highway speed we'd have all been seriously injured.

Flights. Yes, several long flights. I flew from Dallas, Texas to Minneapolis, Ninnesota where I met most of the other travelers and our tour guide; we then flew to Amsterdam, The Netherlands; and from there to Nairobi, Kenya, East Africa. It was a long day and a half. We boarded our assigned vehicles and headed for our first overnight resort. Returning, our last resort was a long distance from Nairobi, so we took a small airliner from a field near the resort to Nairobi, then retraced our steps to get home. We did have a little time in Nairobi and visited a national museum there.

I took 2 cameras. I own a Nikon D7100 and fitted it with my 18-200VR2 zoom lens, and I rented another D7100 and put my 200-500VR2 zoom lens on it. I carried the smaller rig on its strap around my neck for quick access and the big lens was in my camera bag. In the vehicle I made the camera with the big lens ready for use and we had adequate time at each stop to use either or both cameras. The photos I posted to Flickr were taken from both cameras. I used 2 cameras so that I would not have to change lenses in the field (dust).
