I've been asked to come up with two examples of situations using mutual exclusivity. The rules: - A and B must be mutually exclusive - B and C must be mutually exclusive - A and C are not mutually exclusive Because I'm a car geek, the easy one for me to come up with has to do with lighting -- low beams, high beams, and fog lights. You cannot have low beams and high beams on at the same time You cannot have high beams and fogs on at the same time You CAN have low beams and fogs at the same time. (Yes, this assumes you haven't tinkered with the wiring to "overcome" the way things are wired from the factory to conform with FMVSS (Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards.) Now I need a second example. Whatcha got, SF math geeks? God bless America.

By golly, I think that works! I can't be inside and outside at the same time. I can't be outside and upstairs at the same time. I could be inside and upstairs at the same time. Works! Haha! I mentioned "I'll post this on SF and betcha we'll have an answer within an hour." Thank you! God bless America.

I thought of that one, but it doesn't exactly fit the requirement. In that example, you can have any two, but the problem requirement is somewhat different. (Darnit. Because I wanted to use that one.) God bless America.

I think that works, konata, but I can also argue that it doesn't. It's like a number of other examples we came up with: two of the three are very much alike to begin with, so it almost guarantees not being mutually exclusive. I'm thinking the intent of the assignment is to make the set from independent events. One we ruled out had to do with sports, where the events were football, basketball, and touchdown -- A touchdown is generally part of football, not an independent item. I'm thinking on geometry now -- square, rectangle, trapezoid. Remember learning in grade school the "a rectangle is a square, but a square is not a rectangle" thing? Using definitions found on mathisfun.com, I'm not sure I can make that one fit the requirement either, though. Ehh, the assignment was due at midnight, so it's all for fun now. God bless America.

You can make it extremely simple. Dog Bird Mammal Mom Dad Grandma Almost perfect is the : Odd Number Even Number Prime Number 2 screws that up royally. Could make it a bit more complex and requiring some thought. American Citizen Korean Citizen Australian Citizen 10 years to retirement! Just waiting!
