I don't mean to second guess you and my math skills have never been red hot, but could you mean that 11,421 days represents the 31 years you were IN the army.

No that represents the 31 years in days I've been retired from the army. Just like what the OP was asking.

Enlisted in the Army on 22 Nov 72 and retired from same on 5 Jan 95. So from army retirement date to posting date is 11,421 days give or take a few hours. Smile

to save me I can"t replicate how I FUBARed that up. Apologies, man

I like metrics; Days in Retirement is one of several dates I keep track of.

As of Today's Date, April 14, 2026, I have 5,377 Days to Live; that's 14 years, 8 months, and 19 days or a total of 768 weeks.

I've been retired for 2,203 days or 6 years, 0 months, and 12 days or 315 weeks. Or counting from the last day I got a paycheck from a company. I really did retire in Feb 2017 but someone called me and asked I work for them. I did for about a year as it took 3 years for my house to sell.

One milestone I'm tracking is when my Days in Retirement is equal to the remaining Days I have left to live. That will happen in June 24, 2030 or 1,532 days from today or 4 years, 2 months, and 10 days, or 219 weeks total.

Needless to say, my days left to live is based on probabilities reflected in actuarial tables. My target day of dying changes as I age and is not tied to a static end date.

"It did not really matter what we expected from life, but rather what life expected from us. We needed to stop asking about the meaning of life, and instead to think of ourselves as those who were being questioned by life – daily and hourly. Our answer must consist not in talk and meditation, but in right action and in right conduct. Life ultimately means taking the responsibility to find the right answer to its problems and to fulfill the tasks which it constantly sets for each individual." As a self-employed IT consultant, it is not so easy to determine when my retirement actually began. Counting from when I last received a client payment, it is 1914 days. Yes, I was surprised at that number. The work that was billed for was performed a month or so earlier, so add 30 days if your opinion varies.

Since Mrs. A. still has at least five more years of working (and is unlikely to quit even then), I don't think I will experience the fabled retirement lifestyle (wine, women, and travel) for a while yet.

And, in truth, should one or more of my (former) clients request assistance, I would be delighted to negotiate some hours.

Insurance companies do it for business profit.

I actually learned the principle from a story I heard a long time ago about a man who kept a jar of marbles in a jar in his garage and every year he would take one out.

And, actually, now that you've made me think about it some more, people playing in sports games do it all the time so how is that strange?

As with most life lessons that are learned only in the latter part of life, I have now realized the meaning of phrases such as "redeem the time!" or "Seize the day!"

I've learned that time is like grocery coupons. You go to the grocery with them in your pocket. But if you never use the coupons, they're worthless. You have to intentionally get the product that corresponds to the coupon and redeem the coupon and unlock the value of the coupon. You have to know what coupon you have, intend to use it, act on your intent, in order to redeem the value.

It's the same thing with time. And when you're in the last two minutes of the game and you find yourself behind, most people panic, give up, or become desperate and become reckless. Or, you can be like cool Joe Montana who was great in redeeming the last two minutes of any game.

Now, that I have only 5,374 days left to live instead of the 20,600 days I had when I was twenty years old, I'm making sure I'm getting the full value out of each day as I can with no regrets.
