The town I grew up in, in SE TX, had/has a large pallet mfg company [named
Wooden Pallets, of all things, keep it simple I guess] nearby. Lots of semis full of pallets moving out of there.
IIRC, they also had a 'scrap' yard that was free for the picking.
Learned recently, that you have to be particular if you're getting used pallets & look at the stamps/labels on them. Some are treated with a toxic chemical that you wouldn't want to use for burning nor anything you're going to be infrequent contact with.
The ones we looked for were marked HT for Heat Treated. I don't recall the other labeling.
