Well, like many of you, I received my notice of non-renewal from Farmers. They are leaving Florida. I have a few months yet but was wondering what are the rest of you are experiencing and who do recommend as a new company.

I was also non-renewed by Farmers. They did the automatic renewal with SLIDE without asking me and it was an atrocious cost. I was able to get better coverage at about 2/3 the cost with Tower Hill.

Have a local agent shop the market. Roof and Wind Mitigation help to lower costs.
Brightway is a broker that has multiple insurance companies to shop. Keep in mind--may be handled thru the phone rather than in person.

Quotes from a number of companies varied from around $2,000 / year, to the $5,000 neighborhood. Eek

I got decent quotes from both Amica and Kin.

Kin was easier to deal with, allowed me to tailor the coverage to my specs instead of insisting on a bundled package, so I went with them.

Sounds like the cost of insurance is going to quickly cancel out any cost of living savings for people trying to flee other high cost states.

I’m just down 41 in Dunnellon and use American Integrity. We used Tower Hill for our house in Ocala. AI has tripled our cost over the last 7 years but then again our house had artificially doubled in value during the recent real estate boom but they were still the cheapest we could find.

Yep. In TX, the cost of property/home, homeowners insurance, and property taxes is certifiably ridiculous now. So I’m working on fleeing my home state. I got my homeowners renewal in January and it’s Florida priced. I’m in NTX where do not have hurricanes like Corpus or Houston. Doesn’t matter, same state. I realized this was going to happen 5-6 years ago, started looking for land out of state, and purchased it just over a year ago. Will take several years to pull off the move.

I hope there is data showing that politicians and other big wig government and business execs are getting their insurance policies cancelled just like the rest of us.

With these large scale cancellations, I wonder what the net impact will be to their bottom line. Other than large scale catastrophes, they will be pulling in less revenue for similar cost structures. Unless they are going to be laying off people because of less policies.

USAA if you’re eligible. Their adds say if your parent or grandparent served you can join. I got in via my dad who’s a vet. There is so much military and ex military in FL I can’t imagine them leaving. Especially the panhandle. I have multiple huge bases less than an hour away in each direction. Eglin AFB, NAS Pensacola, Whiting etc.

My roof is a 2008 and they have not complained yet. Price goes up every year but that’s expected. Wife’s aunt was a manager of an insurance brokerage when we bought and she couldn’t place us with anybody in 2021

Also have a pool with diving board and they didn’t flinch.

I shopped it to State Farm 2 years ago and it was going to be a few hundred per year cheaper all in including cars etc. I paid $100 out of pocket for a roof inspection and it came back a 3 out 4 being best and they refused to write the policy. Assume it was age of roof then. So I keep saving for when I get told I need a new roof. So I suck it up and just stay thankful I have any insurance.

I'm self-insured on our home in Florida. My dad went with Kin and no wind or flood. His house had basically the same damage for Ian as it did for Charley and now that all the soffit has been replaced with cement board, it’s not likely to have that damage again. Neither of us have mortgages though.

Funny how they collect billions in premiums and as soon as you file a claim they threaten to drop you as a risk.

An area gets wiped out and they actually have to be there for you as advertised and they are gone....

I've been dealing with the Florida insurance "scam" lately myself. I've had Citizens (state run agency) for close to 18 years. Every year they try to pawn me off to a private company but if the propsed quote from the private company is more than 20% than Citizens I get the option to stay. So every year I vote to stay with Citizens. Last years insurance was just over $5600. Back a few months ago I was told I was being non-renewed with Citizens and transferred to Slide Ins Co as their quote was less than 20% higher than Citizens. No choice in the matter. So last week I get my renewel notice from Slide for $8400. Spoke with my agent who said she now spoke with Citizens again and advised them that $8400 is quite a bit more than the less than 20% rise in premium I was promised. So now I am waiting for the new quote from Citizens as they said they will take me back. I'm not holding my breath on getting anywhere near a reasonable rate. And don't forget I also pay about $1400 for flood insurance on top of this. And people wonder why I say I'm leaving Florida as soon as I retire.

Exact same thing happened to me.

My Farmer's policy was about $2,500 per year. My agent let me know I was being non renewed with Farmers and told me she was going to place me with Citizens for $2,900. I had to get an inspection, wind mitigation, etc. All this happened over the course of a month.

About 2 weeks before the Farmers policy was due to expire I see a $7,500 debit in my escrow account for Slide Insurance. Apparently Slide took over all Farmers policies at triple the cost. My agent took care of canceling the Slide policy and getting the escrow refunded.

So, I say two things; Get an agent. And do not be surprised if you end up with Citizens.

My most recent annual home insurance with Farmers was $1,004. It’s due for renewal next August. It’s for my condominium. My auto and umbrella policies are also with Farmers.

Farmers has ceased issuing new home policies here in California, but they still renew existing policies. I’ve been with Farmers for 40+ years in MN, FL, AZ, and CA.

Self insured works if you have no mortgage. Just have a healthy cash cushion in case you need to repair or get a new roof

And in case someone has a slip n fall and you get a call from Morgan and Morgan you better have it buried in a trust, your cash assets well protected or a liability policy to cover legal.

LA legislature just introduced a bill to remove the 10% Citizens surcharge above any other policy. I was with LA Citizens for many years as it was the most affordable option. Luckily USAA finally wrote me a policy as I was looking at a 20-30% rate increase based on my neighbors renewal quotes
