As other's have said, get on some new/modern and safe equipment!

Binding technology has come a long way. The release pattern on new bindings for both the toe and the heel is not just lateral and/or upward movement. Some toe pieces release up a little upwards slightly and some bindings have some slight lateral release.

As an anecdote story, I have been a ski patroller for 30 seasons at a ski area in PA and have seen a lot out on the hill (both funny and some not so much).

Almost every season, without fail, we get a call to help someone with 'equipment problems' off of a trail (can't say ski slope you know, because that's racist), and when we get there, and it's always a guy, he's holding his 205 cm long 'skinny skis' and standing in his ski boot liners because the shells of his boots were shattered (due to the age of the plastic and then being exposed to freezing temps).

It's always good for a nice laugh (unless the guy is hurt)!

Don't be THAT 'guy'!!

Have fun!!

P.S. - let me know if you head up to Blue Mountain Ski Area so we can take some runs together!

This topic made me laugh. I have a pair of Dynastar skis I bought in 1984 that have never been drilled to have bindings on them mounted. If they were a car, I could get antique plates.

Wife and I just spent a couple of days near Tahoe. While at Heavenly the shop there had rentals that they were selling for as little as $200 with bindings. These were top of the line demo skis not the bulk rentals. Bought a similar setup for the wife two years ago for $150. A few surface scratches and their name in marker but I can live with it for the price. Her set up would have been close to $1000 new.
It's a whole different world than 35 years ago. Most resorts have well designed high speed lifts. Results in few lift lines. If you avoid holidays and weekends you won't even notice a crowd. Other consequence of the high speeds is that you can come close to skiing DOUBLE the vertical feet that you skied back in the day.
In my case the combination of high speed lifts and my age has my legs toast by 2-3 pm and I used to ski hard from first lift till last. I'm not alone when i get to the parking lot at 2-3. About half of the cars parked near me are making a similar exit.
The new equipment really does make a difference. Most are rocking a helmet. Embrace it and get yourself an audio setup. Especially if you will ski alone at all.
Our "go to" is SLC. A half-dozen excellent resorts right there. Cheap by comparison to CO or CA. If want an old school, locals type experience make the 75 minute drive to Powder Mountain.

I finally got rid of about five or six pairs of skinny skis and three or four pairs of first gen 'shaped' skis. Gave them to a fellow patroller who has a friend that makes Adirondack Chairs from them and shot-glass skis.

Who Invented the Shot-ski And Why?

I don’t remember. I’ll look next time I’m over at my parent’s home - they are still in my room.

Take those old skis and burn them.

On a lark I skied my early 90s K2s awhile back. The difference between them and my current ski is like going from a bi-plane to an F-35.

Yes, I found out a few years back when I skied Snowbowl in Arizona on my old Voelkl straight skis that I was considered a, "Vintage Skier". I'd like to get back into literally having Alyeska less than an hour away. But I know enough I'm not going out on 20 year old skis, bindings and boots.

Go to UT.
Lots of options, for both mtn and accomodations. I have friends in Park City and that's my go to, however, I'm a fan of Powder Mtn and Snowbasin up by Ogden. On occasion I'll head up Little Cottonwood to hit Snowbird or, Alta, traffic jam in canyon on epic days can be rough.

For fun in the late 90s, I sprayed a fresh coat off silicone on my Sorels, dusted off my 1986 Burton Cruzer 165 and went snowboarding. I was called old school by several people. On my last run, I caught the back edge downhill, slammed my head into the ground, blacked out and woke up at the bottom of the hill. That was the last time I went snowboarding.

A helmet seems like a good idea.

If they were "Head" I would for sure keep them! Wink

K2's were fine.

I am not always in the "buy new" camp.

Hell, they worked great before. Why not now. Throwing money away is something we have got very good at.

No affiliation, but I have purchased a handful of 'new old stock' skis and bindings from Colorado Discount Skis, both recreational and race skis.

Give them a call if you are not sure what you may want, and the owner will give you good advice.
