Talked with my landlord today at the shop. He said he has spotted young men checking car doors in his neighborhood during the day! He lives just outside Old Town Alexandria, VA. Seems after he spoke with his neighbors, this is almost a daily scene. Not surprising, I guess.

They started out here checking for unlocked doors every few months. Last month, they escalated to smashing side windows in my neighborhood and 2 adjacent neighborhoods. They scored 7 guns between midnight and 7 AM plus a BMW with the keys left in it. Everybody feels good because they have exterior cameras pointed at the vehicles in their driveway, but in reality they are such low quality you can't get positive ID or a license plate # off their vehicle. My neighborhood is less than 5 years old and the 2 adjacent neighborhoods are less than 12 years old so every house has decent size garages. However, I'm constantly shocked how many people park $50,000+ worth of vehicles in their driveway while a bunch of junk that wouldn't fetch a $1000 occupies their garage. ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ It is your upbringing. We had one car and it was in the garage. Later we got another car and it was garaged as well. Affluence and poor parenting I guess. I have a gun in my car when I am in it, no other time.

It is amazing in this age how many folks leave their cars and even houses unlocked. Don’t get me started on leaving anything of value visible in the vehicle let alone a weapon that is not secure. Low hanging fruit gets the most attention.

They caught the 22 y.o. that walked through an unlocked garage door, Turned the ignition with the supplied keys, Stole a three y.o. s.u.v. , with out the owners knowing. They "caught" him three days later when he couldn't extract himself from the totaled vehicle. A passerby called in the wreck. Then they hauled him in. Safety, Situational Awareness and proficiency.
