Just this week I got a pair of Impact Pro muffs. I took them to my outdoor range today and am not sure if I like them or not.

They do not seem to dampen the crack of the shot as much as I thought they would. Several years ago, I had a very cheap pair and they really blocked out the report.

Should I send these back and try another brand?

I would if I were you.

You've got to like the ear protection you use or it becomes a distraction.

I have the HL slim electronics which I really like but when shooting indoors I do double up and also use a set of foam ear plugs as well.
The combination really does the job for me when clearing the range with my S&W 629-44mag.

I have the same ones and I agree. I did not think they muffled the shots as much as I expected. A few years ago I had a really cheap Harbor Freight or something like that pair that muffled it much more.

Another thing I noticed is while I can hear people talking okay, background noise is actually much loader. Walking on the sandy range at Sig Academy was like a sand storm in my ear. I brushed a branch in my backyard and nearly jumped out of my shoes it was so loud.

These go to eleven.

I have had mine for years. Bought two sets. Thought they were great from the get do. Still do.

You know you can adjust the volume, right?

I highly recommend the Walker Brand. I have 2 sets, one for my handgun/rifle shooting bag and one for my shotgun shooting bag.

Love these things, especially as I'm hard of hearing and they amplify enough that I can hold conversations with them in.

OK the end noise reduction has literally nothing to do with the electronics. And the electronic products are in the low end of the NRR available range. The model I think you are talking about is an NRR of 22. A basic pair of really cheap 3M passives might be 30 NRR. The difference is a lot. When I use low NRR headsets (which are generally thinner so help cheek weld, I always double up with in ear protection). FWIW>

I got some HL electric hearing pro a few years ago for Christmas. They lasted 1 month before the electronic part broke.

One of the reasons I bought these is they are 30 NRR.

If they are already nrr 30, then your tactic is simply to double up with something in ear. There is not much more you can do. Its what I do especially when shooting big stuff.

I run impact pro with surefire ep4 with the plug open or close depending on circumstances.

Two weeks ago I bought Walkers xcel with BT and gel cups. They are twice the cost and I like them a lot more but I haven't used them indoors yet.

I have been using them for a couple of years. Mine work great.
Are you using glasses with thick stems? I found they didn't work great sealing the cups around those. I went to ESS Suppressor glasses with very thin stems and the seal was much better.

have those same headsets, works fine outdoors, indoors not as good, depending on the number of people at the range and what I'm shooting doubling up is the best option.

I have a set of custom made ear plug inserts for riding on the motorcycle, wind noise can really hurt your hearing since it's constant for longer times, it's not just loud pipes that do damage.

Big Ear Inc makes them, and you can order online, they used to come to the events, make an impression then send you custom fit ear plugs. They do fit perfectly, none of that squeezing a ball or tube of foam into your ear.

So instead of buying new ear protection, augment your existing coverage with custom made plugs.

I went shooting again today and they worked great. I had them turned up too high the first time I tried them.

I have a set of custom made ear plugs that I had made at the NRA annual meeting several years ago. They are fine with shotguns, but not so good with handguns. I have never tried doubling them up with muffs.
