One of my daughter's dog, a beloved family member, passed away early yesterday morning in her sleep. I normally wake up early and greet her each morning before anyone else is awake, and she always remains perfectly motionless, except for her tail, which whomps the floor rapidly with great force. She was naturally a large dog, so this ritual tail whomping on the floor made it shake a little, but apparently never enough to wake up the rest of the household. This ritual tail slamming was her way of acknowledging a hearty K9 good morning to anyone and everyone in the house. She was 10 years old and had battled a mysterious autoimmune disease for over a year, and appeared to be doing better for some time, but being a larger older dog, my guess is her number just came up. Fortunately she was her old self as happy as any dog could be up to the end, and had simply passed away in her sleep.

My mother also passed away two weeks ago Saturday afternoon. I got the call from my father who had been taking care of her for a while in home hospice. I missed her passing by 10 minutes, though I'm glad I was close by so I could say goodbye before my sister called the funeral home.

My sister also lost her husband this summer, who was also my friend, after a long battle. But she has bounced back to some degree and remains healthy and active. My Father is coming along nicely making some adjustments and figuring out life going forward, and my daughter is processing the loss of her beloved dog as good as could be expected.

So I guess my message is we don't last forever, so take advantage and enjoy your own life and the life of your loved ones, in spite of the things we have no control over. In any case I'm anticipating a nice holiday season for everyone in my family in spite of these recent losses.

And I hope the same for everyone here who has experienced recent and past losses. Happy Holidays to you all.

Heartfelt condolences, dogloving member. Thank you for a point well taken. Suddenly, I am truly giving thanks with the depth of emotion that is the purpose of this holiday. Once again, thank you for reminding me.

P.S. My dog is 17 & depends upon me for everything. A true love has developed between us. I rue the day that I suffer his passing.
