Bad Words vs Acceptable Words
Could it be a matter of class?

Imagine a doctor at the hospital walks into a room and discovers two of the staff members having sex. Before the doctor can even gasp at what he's discovered, a janitor walks in behind him and discovers the same scene.

Later that night, the doctor and the janitor discuss the day's activities with their spouses.

One of them says to his wife, "I had an especially atypical day today. I walked into a room wherein two of the staff members were engaging in an illegitimate act of sex!"

The other says to his wife, "Shit! I walked in on two motherfuckers fuckin' each other in an empty room today!"

Can you guess which man said what to his spouse?

We would assume that the doctor said the first sentence posted above because the more educated a man is, the more we expect him to have an elevated vocabulary. We used to admire gentlemen for being gentlemen, and that usually meant they had an elevated vocabulary, and were skilled in conveying their thoughts with out the use of profanity, etc.

(This is in no way meant to disparage people who work in the janitorial services. I've met many genuine gentlemen who were janitors. I worked as a janitor for several years. I only meant to say that the more educated a man is, the more elevated we expect his vocabulary to be.)

"Class" is not defined by education (at least not "formal education")--it is a matter of breeding (by which I mean "rearing"). My parents and the rest of my extended family were not highly educated, but they had been well brought up and raised all their children (including me) to also be. From a statistical point of view, education level would possibly have an effect on "class", but in the final consideration it is due to the parents.

The biggest problem with the use (overuse) of profanity is that it robs an expression of its effectiveness.

Obviously, it is rude to shock or offend someone by using words or expressing ideas that they find distasteful, but sometimes, dammit, they deserve it! Boogers to those who deny us the honor of being able to trot out the words we need to fully express our feelings!

And to get to use of the word "fuck." Who could possibly find what is perhaps the best thing two people can share objectionable? Doesn't that reflect more on the offended than the act?

I couldn't agree more. My mother's side of the family were folks with no education (after high school) but were, without a doubt, very classy people. And, they all frowned on the use of profanity.

Mom graduated high school and dad graduated 8th grade, and I got my mouth washed out with soap as a kid on several occasions. Lava soap. Yuck.

Can't say as it did any fucking good though. Big Grin

people that can't speak or express themselves without using foul language don't realize how low class that portrays them

Well it wasn’t just 50 yrs ago that shit, piss, fuck, cunt, Cocksucker, motherfucker and tits were really BAD words. Now they’re mainstream. And even tho I cuss like Al Swearingen, I think it’d be better without them.

Fornicate off with this bull feces. I like it, but pretty sure I'll look foolish with this new way of swearing...

Context is important.

this x100

many things are this way also- a woman wouldn't walk into a business meeting (generally) in bra / underwear - but the same woman an hour later at poolside you wouldn't have a second thought

if you tackle a man on the street - assault / battery - an hour later playing football it's a great play

think about personal space - on a crowded subway or elevator you may be packed so close you are touching your nearby passengers - if it's not crowded - you give them appropriate space...

etc etc

people who let fly with frequent curse words in my opinion have decided to turn the 'context filter' to the off position.

also think they are intellectually lazy because instead of choosing from a vast array of descriptive terms - they dumb it down to 'f-this' and 'f-that' which is ignorant - just lazy kind of like the over-use of non-terms like 'literally', 'you know', 'like' etc just poor communication skills

(was in the Army for 7 years so not at all a stranger to vulgarity / cursing / profanity, etc Wink )

"Male bovine feces"--"bull" was also an old swear word. Wink (And I do use those terms . . . .)

Interesting, I have never heard anything like that before. Maybe not so foolish, afterall, then.

Somehow “get off my lawn” doesn’t have quite the same meaning as “get the “FUCK” off my lawn”.

Just sayin’...

I have found that "fucker" is a very useful gender neutral pronoun.

"Fuck" is one of the most versatile words in the English language and fits into many grammatical categories. Sig Marine used it as an adverb.

I have wondered a similar thing. Fallen Catholic who was always told cursing was a sin.
Yet some expressions are ok. Example best explains.
Know a very religious fellow who uses the term "pot licker" when I or others might use SOB or Ahole. Always seemed to me that whoever your supreme being was would know your true intention and if it was uttered in anger. Which in my mind is the true "sin".
