Omedetou Gozaimasu!!! I have a friend who got her shodan not too long ago. This is not an easy system to make rank.

I'm already in fair shape. So not a lot. Big thing I noticed was lower back was really tight first few months. Muscles weren't used to being used the way they are in BJJ. Biggest take away for me is getting use to moving a new way on the ground. Plus gaining sensitivity with my feet. Able to use them more like hooks / hands to move another person. Congratulations on earning your belt. Now, when can you get ready for Royce Gracie?

I figure training at the pace I am. x4 hours of Gi & x2 hours of No-Gi a week. Plus rolling hours. To just hit the minimum hours it's easily x2 years off. But it's about the journey. Many congrats on your rank, an admirable accomplishment. In my earlier years we incorporated ju-jitsu into our style, absolutely loved it. Here is one of the few remaining photos of those old memories. We had the late Dennis Palumbo do a seminar at my dojo. We incorporated his style into ours and became affiliated with his Federation. I wish you great success on your journey. Definitely a part of mine filled with many great friends and memories. Just shy of my 15th year I had to commit more to my career and slowly moved away from the arts but will always be a part of me. Good luck. I'm along the back wall with the black gi bottoms. Good advice. My KM partner dropped out with a back injury (not related to KM, but still sport ending). BJJ will definitely humble your ego. I'm a big guy, 6'2" 250, and those little guys just love long arms and legs. Now, glove up, put on the shins, and we're gonna have a different outcome. But once we hit the ground my power and strength just makes me look stupid and get locked up faster. Ego checked. Congrats on the belt. I treasure that training time. Fun, focus, and when you learn to slip or submit somebody a light goes off "AHA!" And then you're hooked. _________________________ You do NOT have the right to never be offended.

Congratulations on the blue!! Now you have a target on your back. I'm in my 11th year of BJJ and have been a brown belt for 16 months. I turned 50 last year and love every moment on the mats. Keep at it.

Flow first, power later. |
Congrats! I am a 4 stripe white, before this Covid mess that is. Just had eye surgery, and it is going to be about 8 weeks before I can get back on the mats, get caught up, and get a blue of my own.

Figured I'd brag a bit. Got my purple belt in BJJ back in February of this year. Student Level x4 in CSW (No-Gi) They've gifted me with a key to the place and trust me to run classes when the black belts are out. So I'll take it. To say I'm mildly obsessed would be an understatement. To the point where I go seek out content to learn / train and bring it back to the team. The blue belt to purple belt took right at 3 & half years. Including Gi & No-Gi classes I did some rough math and figure I had around x700 hours of class time + rolling & seminars. Got to meet Eddie Bravo even! He's the Founder of 10th Planet. Anyone have any martial arts journeys they'd like to brag about or share?! Congratulations!! I got my black belt 9/15/22 after 12 years and 8 months of training. I continue to teach but my training has slowed down because I now have three herniated disc's in my neck.

Congratulations, myrottiety! What a journey it's been so far. I found a new gym a little over a year ago and have been training somewhat consistently. It's all no gi, I won't train in a gi again and I'm sure my fingers are thanking me for it. My goal is to have my black belt in about 8-10 years. My focus has somewhat shifted a little bit with throwing in kickboxing once or twice a week. I've been lifting more than I ever have at the ripe age of 45. I lift 3 times a week. Just need to find some space on the calendar for some cardio besides BJJ. But I deep clean the mats at the gym twice a week. Takes me about 2 hours each session. 130° water with disinfectant and the dirty water is extracted off the surface into a dump tank instead of being pushed around. They clean after each session still. _____________

My journey is not as impressive as yours. I started MMA (BJJ & Muay Thai) with my son in 2019 because he was being bullied in school. I believe in "walking the talk," so I joined him in classes. I received my blue belt on my 59th birthday in 2021, and a stripe about 6 months later. While I am not a great martial artist, I am proud of my accomplishments. No one, not even the people in my gym, knew I was pushing 60 years old when I began my martial arts training. It is gratifying to see the face on the youngsters that come in thinking they are going to show how tough they are, when they find out a fat old man just kicked their ass. My son is now very involved in high school wrestling, and that takes a lot of my time. The result is I can't train nearly as much as I had been ( my high point was 12 hrs/wk), and my skills are suffering from it. Hopefully, once he gets his driver's license, I can get back to a regular training schedule. At my age, I doubt I will ever make purple belt, but I don't want my skills to atrophy. It's been a great journey, and I am glad I took it, even if I am on a side trail for awhile. Congratulations to you! This space intentionally left blank.

Congratulations! My son, almost 14, earned his gray about six weeks ago after about two years in. Congratulations Sir. The mats don't lie and every stripe, every belt is earned in jits. There is no "paying to test" no shortcuts. Well done from a 66 year old 4 stripe blue belt. __________________________ Writing the next chapter that I've been looking forward to.
