Self perpetuating academia.
My best friend growing up got his PHD in a field in which he himself admitted there were only about a half dozen jobs nationwide every year. Eventually he got one, doing as you say teaching the same thing to other people who won’t be able to apply it in any possible way other than to teach it to others.

Granted, it was a poorly written article.
The article highlighted regrets? How about asking better questions?
