Navy launches USS New Jersey, first US submarine built for both genders

Guess maybe it’s not all bad since “ Navy to sideline 17 vessels due to manpower shortage”

Generally, ballistic missile submarines (SSBN) have a three month patrol and fast-attack or guided missile submarines (SSN/SSGN) have a six month deployment. A submarine officer will be with their submarine for three years, and will then be on shore duty for two to three years.

I am not sure that is a good idea to put women in a confined space for that period of time.

At one time back in the 80's, we were going to put an observer on a SSBN during a Polo Hat Exercise.

I'm confused. It's the first build that accommodate male and female together separately. How is this "gender neutral"?

Clickbait to inflame.

I think women have been serving on subs before - they've just not been designed from the bottom up to accommodate 2 sexes so some work-arounds had to be made.

In keeping with the theme of submariner jokes...Why do Submariners use powdered soap? It takes longer to pick up.

Exactly what it is, when I read this article a couple of days ago. Nothing gender neutral about it.

All my bathrooms are gender neutral. All that means is either sex can use them as opposed to having separate men’s rooms and women’s rooms in my house.

In addition to the traditional shared bathroom, each wing of each floor of my son’s traditional dorm has a gender neutral bathroom. It’s a just single stall bathroom presumably so visitors of the opposite sex to which that wing of the floor is assigned doesn’t have to run all the way over to the other wing to use the toilet.

A lot of rest areas have something similar, they just call them a family bathroom.

My granddaughter goes to school on Sandy Hook and it is Naval Junior ROTC. The school has followed the build and were invited to tour it while at Earle Naval Station. They were all made honorary plank holders, the kids raised $3000 and gave it to the crew for a party! I thought it was very cool of the Navy to include the school and vice versa. The commander and some crew went ashore and answered questions from the students.

Sometimes like this, i open the thread based on its title and then wonder if it’s a prank and you guys conspire to pull my leg.

I fail to see the gender neutrality, the sub still looks like a huge dick (or dildo).

so what is a gender neutral toilet and a gender neutral sink? I never realized they were different.

Also, how is a female shower different from a males shower? Different nozzle? The hot is on the right instead of the left....

According to Vice Adm. Robert Gaucher, commander of Submarine Forces Atlantic.

“To support women serving onboard submarines, the submarine force, starting with [the Pre-Commissioning Unit] New Jersey, is building all future [nuclear-powered attack submarines] and the new Columbia-class, [ballistic-missile submarines] gender-neutral from the keel up.”

Gaucher told NorthJersey.com that the USS New Jersey was specifically designed to provide adequate accommodations for both genders, such as additional privacy in bathrooms and sleeping quarters. The commander added that the design of overhead valves and top bunks also took into consideration the strength, height, and reach of female sailors.”
