TMatsIt Was a Lion
Our dog was barking. A lot. I went out to see what was up and saw what I first thought was a neighbor’s dog on the hillside behind our house. After watching for a couple minutes, I decided that it was probably a lone coyote. It disappeared from sight for a minute or two, then reappeared further away and she began barking again. I went and got binoculars. It’s a lion. Unmistakable long tail turned into a low question mark. Shoulders prominent above the back line. Small head and ears. I sure wish I had retrieved the binoculars much sooner.
The sunrise picture is to give you an idea what it looks like behind our house.

TMatsOur dog is a GSD. She's fit at 75# and has always been very athletic; however, at 10 YO, she's certainly past her prime. Even much younger, I'd hate to see her tangle with a lion, they just have too many weapons. She's inside the fenced area you see in the photos. I didn't try to photograph the lion, it was just too far to take a decent picture.

GenorogersIsn't it rare to see a lion in the sage brush ? I guess it could be hunting rabbit or more likely antelope. I've hunted WY for antelope and mule deer and only saw lion tracks in the mountain areas that had some timber. Great backyard you have there.

I would say, "yes." Just so you know though, there's no sage brush around here; this is pure prairie grassland.

I have always hunted around Casper and Douglas and don't remember anything but sage. Beautiful State.

Black92LXMy favorite animal.
I’d love to see one (safely) in the wild some day.

wolfe 21I'm assuming it to be illegal to dust it's ass with something along the lines of a small artillery piece for your own peace of mind?
Honestly I don't know as that is not something we have to deal with around here. Just saying my magnification would've been attached to something in the .30 caliber family if I was looking at that. Never understood the idea of getting cuddly with something whose main purpose in life is to be a predator. Nope, not for me.
A Perpetual Disappointment...

CPD SIGI'm so confused

I'm thinking its a lion, I'm looking for a lion, then I'm looking for a GSD...
Then I realized it's a early "Moment of Zen".
TMats, BEAUTIFUL view you have! I'm jealous!
One of these days, if I ever get to retire, Wyoming is on the list of "places to live". Mostly because of views like that.
