The USCG is the often overlooked Fifth Armed Service of the United States of America.

An old soldier salutes you!!!

The USCG does an outstanding job here on the greatest lake. Tax money well spent. Thank you USCG and happy birthday.

Trust me, they were not. I was an SAI (small arms instructor) for many years. When we transitioned from the 1911....scores went down until people mastered the double/single action of the Beretta M9. But when we transitioned to the Sig229DAK..the floor dropped out....i had very good shooters struggle to meet the minimum qualification.....

Lolol fastest way to get Marines going.

As an aside we have a sixth branch of armed service, our other Navy, the U.S. Public Health Service, mostly USCG’s medical corps.

My dad was also a Coastie during the war. Talk about soft duty, he rode a horse along California beaches, carrying a Thompson Gun and watching for Japanese submarines.

It wasn’t always “soft duty”, the only Coastguardsman to receive the Medal of Honor, Douglas Monroe, drove landingships during WWII.

(Okay, so it's not a Thompson; it's a Reising. But it's still a great photo of a WW2 Coastie on mounted patrol. Big Grin)
