Someone local found it buried in their garden. AR-15, M-16, or M-4? Approximate vintage?

It's an older A2 style upper. The Colt 6520 was a really common one that used that upper, but I think it had a pencil barrel.

Either way, that's almost certainly a 16" barrel and there hundreds of thousands of guns built in similar configurations.

One thing is certain, and that is not M16. M16 is 20-inch barrel with a rifle length gas system. That one has carbine length gas system, and, as Brad said, a 16-inch barrel.

Has the old style slim handguards, and M203 cuts on the barrel. A2 carry handle. No bayonet lug. No older than early 90's, whatever it is.

Just because something is legal to do doesn't mean it is the smart thing to do.

It looks like their may be a charging handle, does it still have a bolt carrier and could it be loaded?

The barrel is an M4 military profile with the notch for the 203 launcher.

No idea, I'm not the one who found it.

That forward grip is way too short to be an M-16/AR-15

That is not how to grow an AR.
The correct way is to have extra parts laying around that need a place to go.

Yep, best growing conditions are inside a locked gun safe. Close it up and they multiply like mushrooms.

There is probably a bullet in a crime lab that matches that barrel.

If you measure the pin diameters you could discern Colt or not. Probably impossible with rust to get a good measurement.

I’m assuming this was found in California. Perhaps since it has a flash hider, the person separated it from a lower (which might have had a collapsing stock and pistol grip), and buried both parts to avoid prosecution for an assault weapon, but still be able to utilize if the end of the world came to be. Only thing wrong with that is they forgot the protection. Might be worth it to get a metal detector and search the surrounding area for the lower.

That was actually suggested to the homeowner who found it. Who knows what else they'd find. Don't know if they'll follow up. At any rate, the item has already been turned into the po-po.

Too bad. At the minimum it would have been a hoot to mount it on a plaque with an engraving saying, “Look what my garden grows”, and hang it the the man cave.

That is my first thought as well.

"It did not really matter what we expected from life, but rather what life expected from us. We needed to stop asking about the meaning of life, and instead to think of ourselves as those who were being questioned by life – daily and hourly. Our answer must consist not in talk and meditation, but in right action and in right conduct. Life ultimately means taking the responsibility to find the right answer to its problems and to fulfill the tasks which it constantly sets for each individual." Viktor Frankl, Man's Search for Meaning, 1946.
