Mailbox war, input for damage proof mailboxes...
Guys/gals, the OP's mailboxes aren't being knocked off by neighborhood kids being malicious, people are hitting his mailbox with their car side view mirrors as evidenced by the OP finding the peoples side mirrors on the ground by the mailbox 2 out of 3 times. I'm sure these people don't want to lose the side view mirror from their car on purpose. Bottom Line, the mail box is mounted too close to the street, move it in a 1' and be done with it.

He asked for a tougher mailbox, not advice on whether he should relocate it.

Find a piece of 8" casing to a 3" pipe set in 42 " of concrete (deeper if your frost line is deeper) and cut some 1/4" plate steel for the back and the door. It could be very fashionable if you did it to look something like this shotgun shell mailbox..

A penny saved is a government oversight.

I guess this means he cannot protect the mailbox with steel bollards cemented in?
