45 Cal, there are always old dogs at the shelter that no one wants because everyone is looking for puppies. A friend of mine just recently lost a senior dog that he adopted 2 years ago. He gave her the best end a dog could hope for and she deserved it.

I'm handling aging pretty well, I think. My biggest concern is my inability to retire. We're financially secure, no debt and we have very good health. My problem is that I'm not sure what I'd do with my day if retired. I work from home, can wander around the house/garage during the day.

I'll probably retire next year, I'll be 75. I have lists made out for my heirs, guns, custom knives and other things they should know about. Our dogs are aging, I'll probably never raise another puppy but would be interested in retired service dogs.

I take the dog for a walk around our pasture and woods every morning and feed the chickens. Cut firewood for ourselves since we use about 75% wood heat. Maintain a stack of firewood at the bottom of the hill by the road for a couple of widow neighbors and also provide wood for a wood ministry thru church. Meet with some guys from church for lunch in town once a week. Sunday church, wednesday night bible study, men's ministry book study one night a month(and supper) and occasional saturday work days. Just finished building a 20x20 carport and a new 10x10 wood shed coming in the near future. Not near enough trout fishing but I'll remedy that soon. I plan on doing some gold panning in the national forest this yea(don't plan on finding any) but any excuse to be in the woods. Spend a lot of time gardening(love my mater & mayo sandwiches). Do some canning and pickling in the fall. The wife and I do some hiking and a little geocaching on some of the many trails around here. Like it says below: "It's better to wear out than rust out" and I'll be on the move for as long as I can and when I can't walk any more I'll crawl. Almost forgot I spend some quality time on Sig Forum and shooting. I just turned 69 in October and so far have been blessed with good health though some of my joints could use a little grease.

Aging, handling it well? I guess every day above ground is a good day.

I retired in '03, had a triple Coronary bypass two years later and in '06 began to tour the country on a motorcycle.

I turned 79 a month ago, watch what I eat and have slowed down a bit and I still ride the motorcycle. GF is 15 years younger and she helps keep me active.

After reading the newspaper Obits, I find that being vertical and above ground is a good thing!

60, work at a fairly physically active job every day. I spent most of today climbing up on and/or sitting in the engine bay of a pickup truck. No major issues … yet. I intend to work five more years and will reassess at that time.

I drink Irish coffees. And at 55 now, plan to start bulking up in 10 years.

Major findings

Researchers from The 90+ Study have published many scientific papers in premier journals. Some of the major findings are:

People who drank moderate amounts of alcohol or coffee lived longer than those who abstained.

People who were overweight in their 70s lived longer than normal or underweight people did.

Not well.

I'm a couple hundred days away from 40, and I feel quite terrible. My back is an inconsistent wreck, my hand joints swell and hurt, I've got a bunch of screws and a metal plate in my right leg which doesn't feel great (but I'm glad to still have a foot), I think my mind is slipping (or I'm just aware of how intrusive getting whacked in the head can be on your mind), I don't sleep well and my patience is dwindling. I'm keenly aware of a large personality shift over the past 10 years towards being quite introverted (and I sat here for 5 minutes trying to remember that word, see...I think I'm slipping). My family outside my wife and kids don't recognize me, and I've stopped trying to be the person and personality I was prior to my military service. I find I have more in common with grumpy old veterans than anyone else, and despite my still only being 39, 16 years at war (my part) may have taken a larger toll than anticipated. Parts seem to be wearing down at a rapid pace, and my ambition to solve all problems has definitely diminished.

In short, I don't think I'm aging well at all. I see I'm in good company here.

I'm 58, and the first thing to go when I hit my 50's was patience. And I find that I'm quicker to get annoyed than in the past. Probably the "grumpy old man" syndrome.

I'm 58 also. What I've learned is to stretch after every shower. I stopped once in my 40s and within a week it felt like someone had beat me in my sleep as I woke up stiff and sore.

I try to stay in shape and exercise regularly. I have to tell my 30 something brain and my 52 y/o body that they need to get on the same page though. I try to eat a healthy diet, but realize most of the time I'm choosing the lesser of evils when eating out. Multiple surgeries have taken it's toll but as they say "I ain't dead yet."

I'm 59 will be 60 in May other than some aches and pains at the end of the day I'm feeling fine. With regular doctor and dentist visits I plan to stay this way for a while longer.

I had a birthday last week. I've had indigestion (I hope that's all it is) ever since. I'm not happy about that.

Aside from that and being 12 pounds heavier than I was a year ago, I'm okay. Wink

Hah! Wait until you are 2 months away from 81!!

My health is good, mobility is good, still able to cut wood with chainsaw, axe, split it, stack it. Work out at the fitness center. Only problem I have, which I found out today is I have a cancer on the top of my head. Go in on the 8th for removal. Told to expect to spend the entire 12 hour day.

My second bout with cancer. First one was 7-8 years ago. Prostate cancer. Had Intensity Modified Radiation therapy (uses X-rays rather than hard radiation. (I recommend it for anyone who needs that treatment).

Given my life experiences, I have to say it has been a really good life.

Doing OK at 61 years...

I can still putt a few birdies back to back on the golf course.
Can still ski ONE bump run per day... the rest are cruisers.
No Viagra needed.
My colleagues tell me I'm still writing good code.

I have a very hard time doing things like installing a dishwasher. My back can't take it.
I have a hard time working on the Porsche. Can't lay on cement very long without paying a price.
My CBR scares the shit out of me. It's leaving in the spring. Bikes are going to be a good memory this spring.

Overall life is good, love the wife and family, but I'm seeing the downside of aging.

Rumor has it that ageing can kill you. I'm skeptical so far..
