It is certainly possible that the oil industry was price gouging motorists in CA, but if they were, they wouldn’t even qualify as rank amateurs in comparison to the state. One only has to look at the signs at the pump and do a trivial bit of math (some taxes are cents per gallon, some are percentage of sale price. Wanna guess whether they stack them so you pay a percentage tax on the cents per gallon tax?). The oil companies would have have trillions upon trillions in profits to begin to coming close to the amount of “profit” the government makes per gallon.
