It's been a while since we've updated that list...what documentaries have you seen that you would recommend?

I just watched "Jiro Dreams of Sushi" - about Jiro Ono, a sushi chef with a 10 seat sushi restaurant in Tokyo that earned 3 Michelin stars. Not the most exciting documentary, but it is an interesting character study of someone who takes pride in his work and strives for perfection even if perfection is not really capable of being defined .

I’ve always liked Victory at Sea.

Luckily, I have enough willpower to control the driving ambition that rages within me.

When you had the votes, we did things your way. Now, we have the votes and you will be doing things our way. This lesson in political reality from Lyndon B. Johnson

"Some things are apparent. Where government moves in, community retreats, civil society disintegrates and our ability to control our own destiny atrophies. The result is: families under siege; war in the streets; unapologetic expropriation of property; the precipitous decline of the rule of law; the rapid rise of corruption; the loss of civility and the triumph of deceit. The result is a debased, debauched culture which finds moral depravity entertaining and virtue contemptible." - Justice Janice Rogers Brown

Titanic’s Fatal Fire on Smithsonian Channel.

https://www.smithsonianchannel...fatal-fire/0/3439558

This was first broadcast on New Years Day 2017 in Britain and then made its way to the States. In all my watching and reading about Titanic, I was not aware that they had a coal bunker fire burning for many days before, and also as they set sail into History. The follow-on Mersey Inquiry Commission glossed over it (Mersey had a vested interest in the shipping industry and squelched pertinent testimony by surviving engine/boiler stokers).

The coal bunker fire had gotten so hot that a bulkhead had gotten “white hot” and had lost its integrity, and that was the side of the ship that impacted the iceberg.

Using new computer programming, and not seen before photos, something was definitely wrong.

Next showing is on October 28 (see link for more details). If you get the Smithsonian Channel, it’s an hour worth of your time to watch.

"Beware of Mr. Baker," about Ginger Baker (drummer from Cream and Blind Faith), is fascinating. They could put his picture in the dictionary next to the definition of "mad genius."

If you like food-related documentaries, "In Search of Israeli Cuisine" is well-done and very interesting.

I have this on DVD, purchased shortly after I bought my DVD player.

I watched the TV series, saw the films at OCS, have the VHS tapes somewhere, and my kids got me the DVD set a few years ago.

That young guy is an idiot. It’s the music that separated it from who knows how many programs of the same general theme. We played an arrangement of it at most concerts in Coronado, where it was very popular.

Yes, I grew up back then, too. Went to college with the son of one of the people responsible for putting the series together, though I don't remember his name.

I especially enjoyed playing "Guadalcanal March" while in High School band:

That was quite spellbinding. 'Mad genius' is quite apt.

I thoroughly enjoyed Buena Vista Social Club. It's been some time since I've last seen it but I still recall the looks of wonder on the faces of the old musicians as they gazed up at the NYC skyscrapers for the first time.
