Forget gift cards, turn in your gun for immediate shredding and receive a cuddly stuffed bear!

We need this for a safe and secure location for men to turn in their unwanted testicles for immediate on-site destruction...

Overall, this effort is to improve neighborhood and residential safety by reducing gun-related violence throughout the cities of Florissant, Hazelwood, Bridgeton, as well as the unincorporated areas of the county.

This event affords citizens the opportunity to voluntarily turn in their firearms for destruction, anonymously and without question.

Brilliant. The citizens of the cities mentioned would undoubtedly be far better served by keeping their firearms and instead, anonymously turning in their violent felons for destruction without question.

Not so fast 556fan, If my cousins baby daddy made her give me a Glock that somebody thought might have been used in a drive-by...and a strong-arm...and maybe warmin' up a leg or two, this would be a totally excellent idea, plus it would lead to fewer arrests for gun crime. that's a good thing don't you think?

No, I don't think so. When all is said and done, programs like this continue to shine the spotlight on guns as the problem rather than the people who misuse them. In your hypothetical, all that is being accomplished is the destruction of evidence of a crime with the willing assistance of those same public servants charged with investigating that crime and bringing those responsible to justice.

Believing that this program would lead to fewer arrests for gun crime greatly underestimates the ability of those who would misuse firearms to acquire another one. Even if they were momentarily inconvenienced by the unexpected loss, if they needed to commit a violent crime before being able to secure another firearm, they would no doubt resort to other ways of achieving their goals. The intent and mindset of criminals is the problem, not the tools they may use.
