It was a jest at the 1864 French attempt to set up a puppet Govt in Mexico with Maximillian that would eventually aid the Confederacy and allow France to regain some colonies n the US. Obviously a flop.

Interesting side note. The Am Civil War is what put the Egyptian cotton industry on the map, making Egypt a major cotton producer to this day.

Ah. The Maximillian thing actually occurred to me, but I thought it was too obscure to be what you were referring to. But yes, things didn’t work out too well for any of those principles.

As an example, isn’t it through racial disparity arguments that we lost an important safeguard in having only verified voters vote?

For years in the courts, for years in Congress and for years in the universities, we have eroded our own institutions and society by elevating racial disparity arguments. Maybe the French are on to something.
