Hitch adapter? Recommendations? Login/Join

I have a bike rack that I've been using with my 1.25" hitch. Still need it for my car.

But with the new car, it has a 2" hitch. Don't want to buy another rack.

Can I use something like this for adapting my rack to the 2" hitch? I'm worried about how far the 1.25" section extends into the 2" section, how strong the weld is, and whether or not the adapter will be strong enough to hold the bike rack while I go bouncing down the highway or off pavement.

I think I'd rather have a single unit, no welds, into which I can insert my bike rack. The rack would go into the the hitch as fully as it does today in the 1.25" hitch and only need 1 pin (and no welds). I found one but it's not well reviewed.

You want a sleeve not an extension.

Thanks. Still searching for a sleeve (with decent reviews). Thought this would be easy....

I should have bought the 2" rack before and got an adapter for 1.25"..... I'm now too poor to buy another rack Smile

I wonder if I can just find a machine shop and get a sleeve made so that I can continue to use my existing screw in pin -- wonder if that would be reasonably priced.

I bet you could find a good used bike rack on CL cheaper than what a machine shop would charge to modify.

Thanks. Yea, I was looking at that and it's in the cart. I'm just considering some of the comments where it's actually a small, loose fit into the 2" hitch. I'm not sure if that's a concern or not.

If I can lock the rack/sleeve down in the hitch using my existing rack pin (which screws into the threaded rack hole), then maybe it's okay. But not sure if it will all line up if the sleeve is too small.

Also, I may need to confirm that the existing pin threads will reach the rack inside the hitch. I assume that the same pin is used for both 1.25" and 2" racks but not sure....

Dumb question: How do these sleeves work? They mention needing a flat head screw to attach to the rack stinger. I assume that screw is used in place of the threaded pin that came with the rack. And I should confirm that the length of the stinger past the threaded hole won't interfere with the 2" hitch hole.

In any case, why can't I just use the threaded pin and use a single hole for the pin, the 2" hitch and threaded rack hole? Why would I have to attach the rack stinger to one hole in the sleeve and then use the other sleeve hole to attach to the hitch? Do the 3 holes not align if I use a sleeve?

Without knowing what rack you have, specific recommendations are not possible. The Thule adapter I linked attaches to the stinger with one screw. You slide the adapter on the stinger, line the holes in the adapter up with the wholes in the stinger, then tighten the screw. The screw acts as a set screw and presses against the stinger to keep the sleeve from sliding so the holes the hitch pin will go through stay lined up. You then take the rack, insert the adapter covered stinger into the receiver on the Toyota, and put the hitch pin through the holes in the receiver, adapter, and stinger.

Aaaahhh... That makes sense. Doh.

Okay, so I'm not using the stinger hole with the flat head screw. The flat head screw only holds the sleeve on the stinger in place so that the stinger and sleeve holes remain aligned while inserting both into the hitch.

That makes sense. Thanks. So, I just need to figure out if my current Thule threaded pin will work (threaded section is long enough) with the 2" hitch and sleeve. If so, good to go. If not, then maybe I'll just get a non-threaded locking 2" hitch pin.

What brand rack??
My Yakima came with a sleeve. Check your rack manufacturer for a sleeve the likely make one.

Thule. I checked and couldn't find one on their website.

I did exactly this many many years ago. Bought the harbor freight unit linked above, put it on the rack, and welded it on so it is now part of the rack.

Been working great for about 10 years.
