My truck was hit while parked at The Home Depot. It appears that someone was having issues either entering or leaving the adjacent space. I talked to my local insurance agent and she gave me a number to call to file a claim. The claims department told me that it is considered a hit and run (vehicle to vehicle contact) and will be filed as a collision claim which has a higher deductible and may result in higher premiums. I told her to hold off and let me think this thing over before I file the claim because my agent told me that it would be covered as a comprehensive or uninsured motorist claim. The claims rep said "Too late, a claim number has been assigned." So be careful should you find yourself in a similar situation. Please name the insurance company. I previously got hit in a parking lot and my insurance covered me under comp and didn't raise my rates. If you're goin' through hell, keep on going. More you should be careful in finding a good agent. I would have thought a good one would walk you through the optimum choices so you could make the correct decision. At least that is what mine would do. ![]()

which company? I ask because, my daughter's car was hit (she was parked on the street and some girl hit the truck behind my daughter's car and which was pushed into the daughter's car). The other driver was taken away by the po-po for intoxication. Now, the daughter has uninsured motorist coverage AND the other driver provided State Farm as her insurance. So, all in all, the daughter's insurance SHOULD be inclined to get the police report and waive any sort of deductible. But no, per Geico, they are too big of a company to get a police report and they still need to find our if the other driver has insurance AND, they will refund the daughter's deductible AFTER and IF they get all the info from the police report and State Farm. Until then, they consider it a hit-and-run accident. To say the least, I am moving her to USAA. Life moves pretty fast. If you don't stop and look around once in a while, you could miss it. Just because you can, doesn't mean you should |
Years ago, I was rear ended by a guy (deadbeat) with no liability insurance. I filed, since I was paying all those years for that insurance. The next year when my renewal came, I had a big hit because it's counted against you as if you had caused the crash yourself. I hate insurance companies. ___________________________ Avoid buying ChiCom/CCP products whenever possible.

You need a new agent. I have Allstate and had a similar incident happen and it went to my uninsured policy. No increase in payment. Jim ________________________ "If you can't be a good example, then you'll have to be a horrible warning" -Catherine Aird

Yep once you mention it it's a done deal. Been like that forever. I'd think it'd be uninsured type. You weren't in motion so it wouldn't be a collision

I have found USAA to be a bunch of crooks. I went to Amica after researching on Consumer Reports, been very happy. If it was a hit and run, rates should not have gone up. I would talk to your broker, or switch to a different company. -c1steve

Several years ago was involved in a very minor parking lot incident. Got blown out of hand with the insurance company. Both of us had the same company as well as the same local agent. Had to threaten to call my lawyer before they would get off of the "pot".Think about it ===buying insurance is a legalized form of gambling. ..................drill sgt.

What issues did you have with USAA? I've filed a couple of claims with USAA, none were my fault, and I've never had any issues getting my car repaired or my rates go up. I don't believe USAA is the same company as it was when I first started out with them but I've never had issues and last year I received a disbursement check for 500 bucks from them which was a nice chunk of change that came at the right time.

I worked for an insurance company for 6 years, part of which was as a claims adjuster. Collision is the coverage you use when hit by a hit and run driver even if you are parked. And you do have to pay your deductible unless they find the other party in which case you get the deductible back. Uninsured/underinsured motorist coverage is for your bodily injury only. Some places do offer UMPD coverage but not all, and it varies from state to state. I'm not sure if VA has UMPD and everything I researched was ambiguous at best. However that being said, unless your company has some weird rules, you should be able to open one claim for an event, but with multiple coverage exposures. For example: Claim # ABxxxx-XXXXXX Insured: John Policyholder Policy #AO1-XXX-XXXXXXX Date of Loss: 6/8/2020 Exposure 1: Collision - John Policyholder - Open Exposure 2: Rental Reimbursement - John Policyholder - Open Exposure 3: Liability Bodily Injury - Jane Doe - Open Exposure 4: Liability Bodily Injury - John Doe - Open This is exactly how our claims screen would look . Every once and awhile intake would create the claim with the wrong type of exposure coverage, for example collision instead of comprehensive. All that would need to be done in that case would be another exposure would be opened for the correct coverage and the incorrect one would be closed. But it would retain the same claim #.

What you were told is 100% absolute bullshit. I've been handling insurance claims in Virginia for nearly 30 years - 10 of those with Allstate. What you have is an Uninsured Motorist Property Damage claim, likely with a $200 deductible. It would be a not-at-fault accident and there should be no effect on your premium. A unidentified hit and run vehicle meets the definition of an Uninsured Motor Vehicle in Virginia. Uninsured Motorist coverage is required in Virginia if you have a policy issued in Virginia. If she gives you the slightest push back, let her know you will escalate the matter to the Virgina State Corporation Commission - Bureau of Insurance. https://scc.virginia.gov/pages...20section%20directly. _____________ "I enter a swamp as a sacred place—a sanctum sanctorum. You really need a new agent. They should have figured out the best way to file it and then did it for you. I was also hit with one of the big orange carts at HD. My agent gave me an option to file as vandalism with no deductible and no increase in premium. Claim was about $1000. He had the authority to handle it at the office level. Claims were never in the loop. Your agent sounds lazy.

What agents know about claims would fit in a bee's dick. Also, Allstate agents, among others, do not want to report claims. They will go out of their way to avoid it. They are graded, in part, on a number-of-claims per-book-of-business ratio. The more claims arising from their policy holders, the less they are paid. _____________ "I enter a swamp as a sacred place—a sanctum sanctorum. These issues should be handled by a competent agent. I have had my business with the same agent for thirty years. Periodically I get the run around from the office staff. I call him and he corrects the problem. He has handled numerous auto and homeowners claims for me. This also includes very complicated and expensive hurricane claims. He values my business.
