Several years ago our Viking longboat went under the bridge site. Sadly, it was in the middle of the night and I chose to remain asleep.

Sometimes the gods of war smile on the good guys.
A couple of years ago I read some of Joseph Goebbels’ diary and it was clear that the capture of the bridge was viewed as a disaster by the Germans.

As a youngster my mom
( a nurse's aid in a vets hospital)
talked about attending to two soldiers that were there.

I was curious so I did some research, it was a bit traumatic just reading about it, then I came across Bella Woods info.

After that I quit researching war stuff.

In 1978 I took a cruise down the Rhine & saw the remains. After seeing the movie looking at the remains was incredible. At that time trees did not cover the side of the mountain as in a current photo.

Interesting! Believe it or not, my wife's favorite uncle, her dad's brother, was the driver of that first tracked vehicle that made it across the bridge. Hearing him tell that story was incredible. He never said much about it but did relent and tell us about that day. RIP, Uncle Buddy.

His channel is well worth going back through and watching. On more than one occasion I've found myself a bit choked up.

The WW2 Occupation Medal for Germany for Army & Air Force personnel had the Remagen Bridge towers on the front side of the medal.

I had a similar experience. In ‘81, I had a work trip to the Düsseldorf area. Midway through the trip I had a weekend to get out Düsseldorf, made a rail trip down river to Koblenz, with a boat ride back.
Plenty of narration regarding places we passed, in German and English. At the appropriate point a long German spiel, followed in English by only: “the famous bridge at Remagen”.

I never knew that! I'm certain my dad got one; he served in the Army in Germany about 1946-48.

The Army of Occupation Medal for Germany was continually awarded for the Berlin Brigade Germany until October 2, 1990.

In 1997 I served with a 30-year old legal clerk in my unit who wore that medal. Naturally seeing a WW2 ribbon on her uniform drew my attention. She had been assigned to Berlin in October 1989, and was present and on duty on the day the Wall came down. She said was a very exciting time on that day.

If I remember correctly, that film was made in Czechoslovakia in the Summer 1968, the “Prague Summer”. The Russians and the Czechoslovakian commies were very concerned about what was happening and thought the movie filming might be a diversion for a NATO invasion.

I was getting my hair cut by an older woman in Palm Coast FL, did a great job. Noticed there was a bunch of pictures of a soldier talking to ranking officers etc at the foot of the bridge. Turns out he was in charge of the engineers trying to keep the bridge open. It was her father. Spoke to her for about an hour. Unfortunately she retired during the covid thing and couldn’t continue the conversation.
