I have an older iPhone - OK, its a 7, but hey, it still works

I'm thinking about upgrading to a more modern 8 or better, and there are some things I've not been able to nail down

I've been able to offload voicemails using a program from Tenorshare and it works quite well

However, one of the items in my setup is that my phone appears to save all text messages, but I don't see a deleted text messages folder anywhere

so, does my phone actually store deleted text messages, and if so, how would I retrieve some of them before I dispose of the phone. Its not important that they get transferred to whichever new phone I get, but there are some I'd like to have for sentimental reasons

thanks all

I'm pretty sure Deleted means DELETED when it comes to texts, but everything 'should' be backed up to the iCloud, assuming that's how your current iPhone is configured. You would need to confirm your iCloud settings (under Apple ID) for each app just to be sure prior to ensure everything you want to back up is in fact being backed up. Once you get a new iPhone and set up your Apple ID on it, EVERYTHING should just download to the new phone...Easy Peasy! Wink

Regarding Voicemails, they should remain with your cellular providers VM service, and technically aren't on the phone. I migrated to an obsolete iPhone 6 when it became clear my Sony Android phone had an impending 'terminal' battery issue, and VMs were in my Voicemail box just as they always were after I set up the 'new' iPhone. I've got a couple of last VMs from deceased family members (my Dad and my Aunt) that I don't plan on deleting, but I haven't archived them by any method such as Tenorshare. Anyway, when I set up the iPhone, I wasn't able to transfer anything from my old phone as I wasn't using ANY 'Backup' method on that phone, other than manually copying pics and videos to a PC. I knew the problem with the battery was developing, so I made sure I transferred all pic & videos, including those in the Messaging app to my PC. There was no chance to save the text messages themselves though.

My advice to you is skip any thoughts of going up just one to an 8 and get as new a phone as possible, like a 13 or 14

Apple is getting ready to release a major iOS update that is going to cut everything off from the iPhone 8 and earlier for updates. You'll be stuck with another old phone with limited updates available.

Is a great source for used phones. Large selection and not just iPhones.

My daughter gets her and the grandkid's phones from them.

She typically buys the "Good" condition, and they look like a new phone. Screen glass are clear and no scratches.

If you get it and are unhappy, you can send it back for 30 days.

I never had an iPhone, but the last two Androids I bought, (Samsung and Nokia) both kept locking up and finally the Nokia "Bricked" less than 2 years, so I got an iPhone 12 and I am very happy with it.

But I could not have been able to afford a new one.

The best deals you can find for used iPhones, in terms of condition, warranty, etc., are actually directly from Apple. Scroll to the very bottom of any page on the Apple website and you will find a link to re-furbished Apple stuff.

When Apple does a refurb, they include a new outer shell (case), new battery, and the same warranty as a new retail unit. Discount from new retail is in the 15% ball park.

But wait, that's not all! You, Mr. Monkey, are entitled to Apple's military / veteran discount, around 10%, which stacks with the re-furb discount, so you're coming in at around 25% off retail for what amounts to a brand new iPhone directly from Apple. It's had to beat that deal.

Actually, anything from the iPhone X or earlier, is already locked out from the current version of iOS. The X has topped out at iOS 16.whatever; iPhones newer than the X can use the latest version of iOS, currently 17.4.1

That may not actually be accurate. My Xs is running iOS 17.4.1 just fine.

I don't think that's gonna work on an iPhone 7. I checked on my wife's iPhone 7 (iOS 15.8.2) and there is no 'Show Recently Deleted' feature. I had checked my iPhone 6 (iOS 12.5.7) earlier and it's not an option there either. Not sure when that became a 'feature', but it would appear that it's only available on iOS 16 (or iOS 17?) supported iPhones.

V-Tail is correct. An iPhone Xs is NOT an iPhone X. When Apple announced iOS 17, they dropped support for the iPhone 8 & iPhone X. Supposedly iOS 17 has limited support on iPhones with A12 Bionic and A13 Bionic chips, which include the iPhone XR, iPhone XS, iPhone 11, iPhone 11 Pro and iPhone SE (2nd generation), but specific feature support varies depending on the iPhone model. Apple iPhones with A14 Bionic and newer chips are fully supported going forward.

My experience is that unless you deleted a specific text, messages remain in your history and backed up in iCloud for your AppleID.

Example - I get text messages relating to medical appointments. If I swipe left on the sending phone number in my list of messages it appears I delete the entire thread. However the next time I get a text from that number, when I open that specific text, all the previous texts from that number still exist and can be reviewed.

With a message thread open, you can flag SPECIFIC texts to be deleted and these will go away (but may be recoverable for 30 days or so)

Before switching phones, make sure you do an iCloud back up and then restore from that back up to the new phone. Everything that was on the old should then be on the new in regards to emails, photos, messages, etc. Even the items that were in the “Recently Deleted” locations/status.

What part of "...Shall not be infringed" don't you understand???

Yes, my earlier statement is, in fact, accurate.

The iPhone X has the A11 processor chip.

The iPhone Xr and Xs both use the A12 processor chip.

The latest (most current) version of iOS that will run on the A11 chip is 16.<whatever> -- the A12 chip is the minumum required to use iOS 17.<anything>, so the iPhone X is not capable of using iOS 17. The iPhone Xr and Xs were the first (earliest) models that could use iOS17.

I am not 100% positive about this point, but I think that the advantage of 5G lies mainly in download speed for things like streaming video, etc. and if the phone is used primarily for calls, text messages, email, etc. I don't think that the user will see a significant difference between 5G and LTE. Am I correct about this? I don't know for sure.

I looked in my settings and iCloud backups are turned off and there is no deleted message folder for texts.

I have a few voice mails that I want to save, other than that I’m just going to bite the bullet and do something I swore I wouldn’t do and that is get another iPhone.

Thanks for all the advice - much appreciated.

If you're getting another iPhone, I'd turn on iCloud 'backups' (under Apple ID), and allow it to back up any/all of the data you would like to retain. It should happen overnight when your phone is locked and has a Wi-Fi connection. It will essentially transfer EVERYTHING over to the new iPhone once you set up you Apple ID on it.

There are a couple other ways to do that:

  • You can back up the old iPhone to a computer, then restore the backup to the new iPhone. I did this for my wife when she moved from an iPhone X to an iPhone Xs.

  • The new iPhone can grab everything from the old iPhone directly. I did this when moving from an iPhone X to an iPhone 11. Can't remember for sure, but I kind of think that both phones had to be connected to the same WiFi network.
