Needs a check up from the neck up |
My father recently passed and I am working on a speech for his funeral. My dad served in the army from 67-69, a college grad he enlisted and went to OCS. His brother did the same, but went to Vietnam first. Uncle Stan did 3 tours to keep my dad out of country. They both made it home. Years later when talking to an army friend who was at an army museum of sorts in DC, he was told that in the museum there was a plaque for his OCS class. Apparently, their class had the highest fatality rate in the history of the Army. My dad always had some survivors guilt of sorts. He always felt a debt to those who did not make it back. I would like to honor those men as well as my dad at his service. I think he would have wanted that. How can I find something on this? OCS class would have to be 1967 year, but I don't know anything else. He was a tank commander but I don't think you are assigned that until after OCS?? Any help would be appreciated. __________________________ The entire reason for the Second Amendment is not for hunting, it’s not for target shooting … it’s there so that you and I can protect our homes and our children and and our families and our lives. Lots of stuff on the internet about this topic. It would be useful to know where he went to OCS... For example, check out these links -- https://ocsalumni.org/about/ https://www.benning.army.mil/Library/OCS/index.html https://army.togetherweserved....e&type=Unit&ID=80666 Or if he attended Armor OCS at Fort Knox: https://ocsalumni.org/ocs-armor-branch/ His personal military records are probably held in St. Louis, but a request for information to the responsible organization is bound to involve a long wait, particularly during/after COVID: https://www.archives.gov/perso...r/military-personnel Etc. | |||

Rover Sig, I found my dad at your link. THANK YOU. I can say that I think there is a misunderstanding as to his story but I did learn of a LT Joseph J. Smith who was in his class. LT Smith was the Distinguished Honor Graduate of his class. LT Smith was killed 28 days into his first tour. My dad loved his country and was humbled by others who he felt did so much more than himself. I recall going to an honor flight reception with him. It is something I will never forget. I'll be sure to include Lt. Smith in my comments. Thanks SF for being the best place on the internet. __________________________ The entire reason for the Second Amendment is not for hunting, it’s not for target shooting … it’s there so that you and I can protect our homes and our children and and our families and our lives.
