Looking at the musicians on the riser, the young lady that’s second from the left has an instrument that I don’t recognize. It’s about the size of a banjo, but has f-holes. Does anyone know what it is? Large, clear view at about 2:50 of this “Orange Blossom Special” 5:33 video. https://youtu.be/eCAFfX_va_I Serious about crackers

Its a mandolin. I believe that jhe888 plays one. "I vowed to myself to fight against evil more completely and more wholeheartedly than I ever did before. . . . That’s the only way to pay back part of that vast debt, to live up to and try to fulfill that tremendous obligation." Yup, eight strings, tuned in pairs. Mandolin. It's a staple in Bluegrass and ole-timey music. הרחפת שלי מלאה בצלופחים

Now that I know its name, I can certainly agree that it was oft used for Old Timey music: “The Mandolin Concerto in C major, RV 425, was written by the Italian composer Antonio Vivaldi in 1725 …” —Wikipedia Serious about crackers

I do, but not all that well. Oddly enough, that girl's name is Amanda Lynn. As you see in RogueJSK's post they come in several shapes. There are other shapes, too. Here's mine: Mandolins are tuned just like a violin (GDAE) at the same pitches. There are eight strings in four doubled courses. There was a craze for Italian style mandolins at the turn of the 20th century. Those sound different than the American style mandos you see above. The fish is mute, expressionless. Pipe Smoker, Are you going to start? I like the way mandolins sound but I'm not into bluegrass or old timey music. I like the way the Eagles use the mandolin in their songs. Are mandolins loud enough to keep up with guitars? I know banjos are really loud. I've had guitars that could hold their own against banjos in terms of volume. _____________

At one point, she was out-playing those fiddlers. If you enjoy family bands may I suggest the Petersens... Hedley Lamarr: Wait, wait, wait. I'm unarmed. Bart: Alright, we'll settle this like men, with our fists. Hedley Lamarr: Sorry, I just remembered . . . I am armed.

Mandolins are as loud as conventional guitars, but not as loud as resonator banjos or resonator guitars (like a National or Dobro). Because their pitch is higher, they sometimes cut though the mix a little more than a guitar. Banjos are the loudest instrument in a string band. They probably even louder than resonator guitars. We had one, an appleback, that I had restored (inlaid pickguard and seam repair in the back). My daughter asked for it, and I gave it to her. Kinda disappointed she just displays it. _______________________________________________________ despite them
