No 4WD on dry pavement, I wouldn’t use it on wet pavement or firm gravel either.

With an auto trans you can leave it in ‘manual’ 1st or 1st/2nd position. That would provide some ‘engine braking’.

With a manual trans, use the gear that makes sense.
