For the washer may I suggest Speed Queen? They ARE all they're "cracked up to be".... and more. Go with analog controls if you can find them.... FredT

All our kitchen appliances are Frigidaire Gallery "smudge-proof" stainless steel. Put in in 2015. Only time will tell about long term dependability of the inner workings but the outside finish is awesome and easily cleaned.

Hopefully you are stacking some pennies to the side.
We put Fridigaire in when we built our last house all died between 5 and 7 years. Never will buy again.

Bosch was bought for the dishwasher and Maytag everything else.
When we bought our current house all the Maytag went with us and the hodgepodge of stuff that was in the house we bought went to the old house.

We have a hand me down Bosch dryer that is about 15 years old and still going rock solid.
Sold the Bosch Washer as we had a 3 year old Samsung and figured it won’t last longer than the old Bosch. We hedged the wrong bet on that the Samsung died 3 weeks after selling the Bosch.
Replaced with a fancy Whirlpool that is nice but will never buy a front load again no matter the brand.

Dont buy a GE washer. I bought a low end top loader because it had the least amount of sensors, the least energy efficient and you could could the water level. What a POS. Replaced under warranty after 5 repairs. New unit is doing the same thing. Repair guy told us GE knows the gearbox leaks oil onto the belt and it slips making horrendous noise during the wash cycle. GE states its within spec and will not acknowledge the issue.

I read the first three posts, and stopped here. This is my recommendation. To include televisions.

I was talking with a sales rep for a large online appliance dealer, while shopping for a washer. She mentioned that LG and Samsung are very good with electronics, but appliances, not so much. In spite of that, my wife picked out and would have nothing but a Samsung model range. I had to replace the convection fan the first year, but it's been trouble free since (about 4 years old, crossing fingers).

For the washer, I ended up with the tank model top loading Speed Queen, and she loves that despite the lower capacity. Initially she wanted a front loader with higher capacity, until I explained to her they use almost no water. She is big on soaking (and/or washing things a second cycle, "to get the soap out"). With the Speed Queen and its two soak settings, she is very happy.

Of the stuff out there, the Whirlpool corporate family is your best bet. In refrigerators, the nicest appointed and most robust are the bottom freezer models. If you want a dispenser model, i would opt for the ones that have the ice bin in the refrigerator compartment rather than in the door.

In washers, you can choose capacity and glitz or you can opt for reliability. In top load washers, the Whirlpool/Maytags are good but you will likely see about 8 years of service out of th ewasher. The current crop of front loaders are very good. But you have to want a front loader. If you want buy once reliability, get one of the classic Speed Queen top loaders. you can expect a +20 year life span from one. However the biggest thing I hear about them is regarding capacity. it's funny that our parents had much larger families and they were happy with a 2.7 to 3.2 cu ft washer basket but everyone seems to think they need one twice that size anymore.

My Estate /Whirlpool washer just stopped pumping out. Gonna bail the tank and finish the wash at Mother's house which we are selling for 98yo Mother. The washer is at least 20 years old. I will look at the underneath later to see if it threw a belt or something.
The Estate replaced 20+ year old Kenmore Whirlpool that were the wigwag type.

Two washers for 40+ years is not bad.

Your recommendation?

One thing, of which to be aware, is that some models of newer designed refrigerator/freezer units do not use a separate chilling mechanism for the two compartments, instead relying on air circulation between them. The easiest way to spot this is the absence of separate thermostats for the compartments. The problem is that when either compartment fills up with food, and the vents are obstructed, you will get condensation and freezing in the refrigerator along with ice accumulation. As a side effect, the defrost cycle is compromised, and icing up of the drain tube and/or catch pan overflow results. Our recently-purchased Whirlpool model is of this design, and the upshot is that we can only use about 2/3 of the interior space. After two repair visits (under warranty), the fridge still pisses the floor almost every night.

Amen to the above. Our local appliance service man refuses to work on these two brands. We have gotten good service out of our Whirlpool Duet front load washer and dryer & also our Kenmore refrigerator (maybe made by GE?).

Let us know what you decide.

^^^From Home Depot people to repairmen and installers, all have said this^^^^

AND, Whirlpool has been nightmare for us, Washer-5 service calls, fridge 4-service calls, Microwave 2-service calls

But, MAYTAG....crickets...quiet and keeps on running!

All have said Maytag and Whirlpool made by same company but Maytag is their top of line product.

We bought a Whirlpool Cabrio washer/dryer set (top load washer), pretty sure on Brad’s recommendation. We’ve been happy with the set over several years now. Our refrigerator is a Frigidaire SxS, and we’d like to replace it. Biggest issue is that the ice cube maker produces a lot of 2 and 3 cube blocks that clog the chute—again and again, day after day. Might not sound like a big deal, but after 6 years of it, you get weary.

I find myself aligned with Brad once again with respect to a refrigerator. I’ve been researching them and have firmly settled on a French-door model with the freezer compartment below. I’ll also take his advice on not having a door ice dispenser to eliminate the problem I describe above.

The in-laws bought us a Whirlpool set when we got married in 1999. I’ve changed a few worn out parts over the years but they are still going strong.

I'll add another voice: Avoid Samsung appliances like the plague they are.

We just replaced our five-year-old Samsung clothes washer and dryer with new GE units. The Samsung products started out problematical and just kept getting worse and worse.

I try never to say "never," but I expect it's unlikely there will ever again be another Samsung major appliance in our household.

My Maytag dryer is 25 years old. Replaced one of the bearings for the drum
about 15 years ago. put a new belt on it. still runs great. When the timer on the
washer went out, took advice from a friend and bought the cheapest Kenmore they had.
That was 15 years ago, still running strong. When it dies I'll buy another cheap one.
My clothes are just as clean as yours. Smile
