x0225095Purple Martin scouts showed up today …
With the warming temps the spring insects have started to hatch and, right on cue, my Purple Martin scouts have arrived to take possession of their summer home in my backyard just above the creek.
Anybody else got their Martins back yet ?

sourdough44No, but somewhat related is when the Tree Swallows come back to check out the bird houses. They usually come right around April 1st, as long as the weather is favorable. Right now we have temps about 40, just a bit of recent snow to melt off.
Once we get in the 50’s, Tree Swallows will be back. They have a distinctive tweet, sure sign of spring & summer.

architectFor us it's like the old saying, the Robins are what foretells Spring. They showed up about a week ago. We do get a few Purple Martins in this area along around June or so, but they are not very populous (not that we don't have plenty of bugs for them to eat).

snwghstAbout 3 weeks ago for me on the Coast
Literally the day after I built and installed a new 24 room condo for them
They needed a new one. Years of tropical storms and hurricanes. Ida finally decided I had to be a responsible host and not a slum lord and blew it away

357fuzzI don’t get Martins around my house. My grandparents on the farm had a couple Martin houses that were filled up w/ them.
Barn Swallows should be back in about 2 weeks. Got a Cardinal singing to me right now a few feet from my window. We have had Robins around for a couple weeks now. The farmers around here always say that there has to be snow on a Robins back at least once before spring is really here. I hope the sleet/freezing rain the other day counts.
