As are over 180 other companies. So the DOW blacklists them by refusing to do any business with them. But yet allows them to operate within the country? Why are they not shut down and made to leave the country? We recognize the problem but refuse to take the steps to solve the problem. We allow the enemy in the gate as well as in the corridors of power. I know quite a few people who work at Cirrus. I remember when it was allowed to be sold to the Chinese in 2011. I worked on the flight line at the time doing weight and balance for Fed Ex cargo planes. The 148th fighter group also operates on those same runways as does Cirrus design. I remember saying to my supervisor at the time "Am I the only one who thinks it's a bad idea having a Chinese owned company sharing the same flight line and within a couple hundred yards of a strategic air base"? The Chicoms can sit in their offices located just yards from the runway and watch the comings and goings of the F16 Falcons all day and night.
This is a poorly written and incomplete article as they still use the Department of Defense moniker. It's a Minnesota news outlet so what would you expect. I'm surprised it's reported on at all.
quote:
DULUTH, Minn. (KQDS-TV) -- The US Department of Defense (DOD) has labeled Cirrus Design Corporation as a "Chinese Military Company."
In a list released by the DOD, 188 companies were identified as "Chinese military companies operating directly or indirectly in the United States."
Under section 805 of the 2024 Fiscal Year National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA), the DOD is prohibited to "Enter into, renew, or extend a contract for the procurement of goods, services, or technology" with these companies.
According to the NDAA, this prohibition will take effect on June 30, 2026
An indirect procurement ban will follow on June 30, 2027.
The United States Air Force Academy currently uses Cirrus SR-20 planes for training. It is unclear if this will continue following the ban.
Since 2011, the company has been owned by AVIC subsidiary China Aviation Industry General Aircraft.
FOX21 reached out to Cirrus for a statement and has yet to hear back.
“…provided they comply with all domestic laws and regulations. However, this access is highly restricted and heavily vetted based on national security…”
Seems to me that a lot of useful intelligence could be obtained by working with these companies rather than excluding them. Perhaps not technical things, but at least intent on what aspects of the US military are of greatest interest to the Chinese, thereby revealing where they feel they are being left behind. A "keep your friends close, and your enemies closer" kind of thing.
That the DOW appears to be timid in this regard is almost admitting to failure before the game begins. Surely we are at least as good as the Chinese at intelligence gathering for national defense. If not, shame on us.

But yet allows them to operate within the country?
I don't think the DOW has the authority to kick them out of the country. Not sure who does.

The Chicom aerospace company that owns Cirrus and (until this week) owns Continental Aerospace Technologies sold CAT to US based PE company this week - the scuttlebutt at CAT from my friends originally from Mattituck indicate Cirrus may be on the auction block too.
Well, if PE is involved, both companies should be gutted and finished off in 5 years. Cirrus has passed through a couple foreign investors and has really lost its way. There was real hope that they would be the salvation of GA. With new SR22s topping a million dollars, that seems unlikely.
