If he did, he might have given her a warning and told her to get it fixed. He may have pulled the same woman over previously. Who knows?

in the beginning around 14 to 18 seconds he said to her "you've been driving around like that for 6 months" or something like that...

I think she told him that she knew about it and had been driving around like that for 6 months. She even said something about getting a warning because she was honest about it.

No fucking way. It is certainly true that you could have a system where you don't have to sign the ticket, but I have been asked to sign every ticket I ever got in several jurisdictions. And maybe they have learned that making people sign makes them more likely to show up. I don't know why some require signing the ticket, but it isn't important here.

Never in my life have I ever had to sign a traffic ticket.

I wasn't clear, and that is my fault. It is in this circumstance that I can't entertain that this is a bad rule. It is the rule there, and in the context of this violation I am not going to give her a pass because the sign-the-ticket rule is a bad rule.

If we go back to the legislature, I might be perfectly willing to change the rule. But the roadside is not the place to have that conversation, and at that time and place, I will not listen to complaints that it is a silly rule.

I don’t usually weigh in on LEO themed threads, but I’m with those who feel the driver got what she deserved in this case. Damn, I wasn’t raised to disrespect LEO’s and I cant imagine my parents ever acting that way in a similar situation.

What is the big deal about signing the ticket? If it's like Ohio, the area you are signing specifically states that you are not pleading guilty, you are only acknowledging receipt. There is a separate line to sign if you want to plead guilty and mail in your fine, assuming it does not require a court appearance.

I get that she deserved it. I guess I am putting it in this reference:
What if it were my mother?
and--I'll bet if it were the officer's mom, she would have been treated differently.
She was unreasonably mouthy and combatative, no argument.
I just think it could have been handled better- and no one supports the police as much as I do, having been one myself.

BTW, can any of you officers confirm/deny whether an arrestee who is given an appearance ticket in lieu of custody signs the appearance ticket? I am not sure how NY handles this.
