Hitting up the SF brain trust. Pulling my boat home yesterday and it popped with loss of power. Need to find a replacement. Hopefully someone has done this and has some advise.

Truck is not stock with 180k miles on it. Before the turbo died it ran perfect.

I have read good things about the Garret GT37 but I am not opposed to other options. Want plug and play and reliability

Smarter people will reply with specific suggestions.

My question is whether your turbo imploded and bits got into engine via intake.

Interesting question. It would depend on what blew up and how small the pieces were. The exhaust side of the turbo would blow out the exhaust system and get trapped in the DOC or DPF. The intake side of the turbo would go through the intercooler, throttle body, intake manifold, and cylinder heads before reaching the valves and then combustion chambers. I don’t think big chunks will make it through the intercooler.

I can't recommend one way or another; haven't had to replace mine.

Just curious, do you plan to do the work yourself?

Did your turbo fail or did an intercooler line pop off? Oil from PCV coats the lines and can cause them to come off. It'll make a pop, loss of power, and sound like a jet engine.

On my truck, when the plastic elbow connecting the cold side charge hose to the throttle body gave up, it was a loud POOM! My first thought was I lost a tire. All the tires were good, there was nothing out of the ordinary under the truck, so I popped the hood and immediately notice a nice black oily spot on the underside of the hood that lined up with a three inch hose and busted plastic elbow that wasn’t connected to anything.

Knock on wood, I have no idea what it sounds like when a turbocharger fails.

edited to change hot to cold. The pipe from the intercooler to the throttle body is cold side.

Fortunately for me this is exactly what happened. It was a loud pop and upon further inspection, the intercooler hose had busted. Couple hundred bucks for aftermarket hose and it’s like new again.

Thanks all for the reply’s!

Glad to have helped. It happened to me, twice, on my 7.3. A lot better than a few grand for a fix.

Which hose? Mine was the cold side from the intercooler to the throttle body. The part was $165 from the dealer.

obviously not your situation now. But my 2011 ate a turbo. no big deal (other than money). On real industrial engines (like the CAT equipment I have) this approaches normal maintenance. (you are a fanatic about warmup and cool down right?) They lead very hard lives and 10 years and 180K isn't that bad...
