Looking for some ideas...

I'm making a PVC beach cart. The sand Rolleez wheels are $75 per set not including the axle.

Figured I'd try and use what I have before I shell out that cash.

The problem I'm running into is how to attach the 1" pipe I'm using as an axle to the wheels. I have a flange I'm using, but it's not doing the job...

Any ideas how I could make this work? And welding is not an option.

You will need an axle and a shaft to put said axle in. Go find a PVC male adapter that you can thread into the center hole as close to the hole diameter as possible. You will also need a nut to hold the wheel on the male adapter. Then you'll need to reduce to chosen axle size (at least 1" in my opinion). Build your frame out of next size larger PVC. Insert axle into frame. Attach both wheels.

Your weak points will be where friction occurs and at the reduction to the axle size.

I have one of these (Lowes link) that I have successfully used at the beach. Look at other options before dropping $150 and still needing to fabricate unless fabrication is part of the goal. Smile

You need a bearing assembly to attach or a solid axle like ffips suggested riding inside of your PVC pipe. Maybe use something like this inside of your PVC and welded or bolted to tires. Gas pipe is heavy though, as are your giant ass steel wheels.

When I was a kid I sailed Laser class and we did not want to leave boat(s) in water for security and hull damage so my dad fabricated a cart using similar wheels and hubs...If I recall, he also used the front steering knuckles.

I believe he attached the knuckles through the frame then made a crossbar to anchor them in place...I am probably fucking up the description and will ask him if he has any old pics

In my example prior, I was suggesting to use the male adapter in the middle of the wheel. That might not have been clear. The nut holds the wheel on the male adapter.

Not sure you can get everything tight enough to work though.

The wheels on that linked wagon have a small bearing in the center of the wheel there is a solid shaft with a fender washer and cotter pin keeping them from coming off.

How much weight? Maybe find an old broken Powerwheels kids toy and mount those to a threaded rod through the tube.

OR to use what you have, make a wood hub, drill a 1/2" hole and mount on a 1/2" threaded rod going through the PVC, possibly with a smaller PVC covering.

Buy one of these from Academy and be done with it.
I've got the large yellow one, and it's great. it has a huge capacity, and the sides fold down if needed. It will cost you way less that what your are proposing, and no fabrication involved. I bought it on sale for $79.

Edited to add: I've used it on sand, and the large flotation wheels worked perfectly, even when I had it heavily loaded with a large ice chest and a bunch of other stuff.
