UPDATE: Solved! -- How To Remove A Deadbolt?
I am trying to change the deadbolt on our front door. When I first looked at it, I thought that it was held in place by two machine screws on the interior side of the door.

Then I went to remove the old lock and when I took a good look, these are not screw heads, they are smooth. No slot for a regular or Phillips screwdriver, just smooth heads.

Do you know how to remove this lock?

UPDATE: Aha! I put the key in and turned it 45° and the two little covers slid out of the way and exposed the screws inside the lock.

Who knew?

Breaching round?

I’ve never seen a lock like that

Maybe the outer ring unscrews.

If not just drill it taking care not to damage the door.

Are they metal caps that can be removed?

If inside maybe the outer ring unscrews.

I am guessing this as well. Unscrew the body.
If not take the plate off the portion of the door and see if you can remove the bolt then pop the bodies off.

no expert here
But does that outer ring rotate off and reveal some screws?

The screws have inserts that fit in the Phillips head so you can't screw them out without removing the insert.

Go to Lowes and look at the Schlage deadbolt package and the insert that comes with it.

How do you remove the inserts?

1. remove striker plate.
2. locate small access hole next to the bolt.
3. should have a small Allen or hex in the hole that is a set screw to prevent cylinder from rotating.
4. loosen but do not remove Allen.
5. unscrew cylinder with key inserted.

Here is the part that screws into Schlage screws:

I would use a small punch to rotate the screw head.

My money is on caps that are covering the actual screws underneath. Pry off the caps with small pic or jewelers screw driver.

Your post is marked as solved but you didn't follow up with which solution actually worked. We need to know! Big Grin

I could have sent my wife over there . I haven't changed a doorknob or deadbolt in years . The woman just has a gift for it . She definitely has more patience than I do .

Update is in the original post, at the beginning of the thread; I discovered that turning the key 45° causes the covers to retract and the screws are then accessible.

That's sort of funny how you discovered it but very ingenious on the designer's part.

"It did not really matter what we expected from life, but rather what life expected from us. We needed to stop asking about the meaning of life, and instead to think of ourselves as those who were being questioned by life – daily and hourly. Our answer must consist not in talk and meditation, but in right action and in right conduct. Life ultimately means taking the responsibility to find the right answer to its problems and to fulfill the tasks which it constantly sets for each individual." Couldn't think of anything, so I started playing with it and staring at it.

We (wife and I) are the original and only owners of this house, built in 1986. We have locked and unlocked that door probably 50,000 or more times in the thirteen thousand days that we have lived here, and neither of us had ever noticed the covers retracting every time that the key was turned.

Glad you got that figured out, because my next suggestion was going to be a shaped charge.
