I saw SRV at Pier 84 in NYC (West 44th St) on August 20, 1988 as part of the Miller Genuine Draft 'Summer at the Pier' Concert Series. Joe Satriani was the opener...And IT.WAS.INCREDIBLE! That was a REALLY Good summer! If my memory serves me correctly (bolstered by google), I saw Santana at the same venue less than two weeks later on Sept 9th, though it also could've been a few weeks prior. Things are a bit blurry, but it always kinda seemed like it was basically back to back shows...The memory is a bit imprecise re: the specifics during that time frame. Regardless, those were a couple of stand out concerts I'll never forget! Fun fact - Blew the transmission in my car just coming out of the Lincoln Tunnel on the way to the show. Lots of traffic headed into NYC and I had a concert to get to! I left it right there on the side of the road and went to the show...Priorities! That car never came back home from NYC ____________________________________________________________ If Some is Good, and More is Better.....then Too Much, is Just Enough !! I made it so far, now I'll go for more |
First time I saw him was just before he. made it big. It was at a ballroom in Hartford, CT. A stage and an open floor. No seating. Great show! The best venue for a show I saw was at the Boston Opera house, first row balcony. He just about blew our eardrums out. Oh yeah, opening for him was Albert King!!! Saw him 6 times, sadly there would be no more. Bob I am no expert, but think I am sometimes.

The guy was a genuine phenom. A great loss. I returned, and saw under the sun, that the race is not to the swift, nor the battle to the strong, neither yet bread to the wise, nor yet riches to men of understanding, nor yet favour to men of skill; but time and chance happeneth to them all. -Ecclesiastes 9:11 ...But the king shall rejoice in God; every one that sweareth by Him shall glory, but the mouth of them that speak lies shall be stopped. - Psalm 63:11 [excerpted]

In the very early 80s, I was really into the Fabulous Thunderbirds; I thought they were one of the best bands in the country, nobody like them, mainly because of Jimmie Vaughn. David Bowie was making a comeback, and a song was pre-released on radio, "Let's Dance", and I was floored by the guitar player. Eventually it was revealed that the guy was Jimmie Vaughn's brother, and when the whole album was released, the buzz was all about the guitar parts, my first exposure to Steve Ray Vaughn. Bowie discovered Stevie Ray at this Montreux Jazz concert, same with Jackson Browne, who gave them free time at his personal recording studio in L.A. I didn't know until years later, that Vaughn's debut album, Texas Flood, was the result of the "demo" recordings at Browne's studio, recorded in two days, played live, no overdubs. And it is still my favorite Stevie Ray album. This Montreux performance completely changed Vaughn's life. SRV jammed with a lot of greats. Everyone seems to recall him with B.B.King but I really liked him paired with his "childhood idol" Albert King. "Some" ??? That man just really knew how to play the guitar! There's a few old interviews, video is kind of grainy, where SRV explained blues music and he's playing an old, beat up acoustic guitar. Two of my favorites are sadly no longer with us Stevie Ray Vaughan Canadian guitarist Jeff Healey. Jeff played something of a similar genre / style to SRV and if pushed would probably say Jeff was the more talented but it is a close race there.

I'd have to agree. I never saw him live, but all the clips I've seen attest to the fact that anything and everything he did live was incredible. But this was off the charts. The song itself, the way he attacks it, the sheer energy. And I don't mean Bruce Springsteen or Garth Brooks energy of running and jumping all over the stage; it's all focused energy that comes out in his playing. I never cease to be amazed at his artistry and his command of the instrument and his equipment. It's breathtaking, and this is as good an example as you could want.

As noted earlier I did see him live. I can tell you that he absolutely put every ounce of energy in him into every note, every lick, every phrase, and every song. It was very obvious he truly enjoyed every moment of what he was doing. At the concert when he was standing at the edge of the stage (7' off the ground) right above where I was standing so his feet were literally 6" from my head. He was bent over looking down as he was playing and of course I was having fun and smiling constantly. I remember two instances of many looking up at him at different points in the night when he came to that corner of the stage. Once he smiled back and gave me a nod before disappearing. The second time I had just helped a lady that was woozy over the barricade for medical attention when I sensed movement above me and looked up. There he was again and he mouthed "thanks man" with a nod and then was gone again. It was clear he was loving every second he was performing. The raw energy that he pumped into that guitar actually made me wonder how it survived the entire night without exploding. I have not seen a single video that does ANY justice to the way Stevie Ray Vaughan sounded in live in concert. I vividly remember, to this day, the incredibly amazing sound at that outdoor concert. Unlike many bands, the music at his live show was better than any studio mix. His sound/music was alive, electric and exhilarating. It was SO DAMN GOOD...Chills! ____________________________________________________________ If Some is Good, and More is Better.....then Too Much, is Just Enough !!
