You may be doing it wrong. I have had heartburn for years. I have hypothyroidism, underactive, and all of these are common ailments for people like myself. I have taken tums, baking soda, etc. My wife also suffers from heartburn and a couple months ago it was so bad she thought she was having a heart attack. The doctor prescribed zantac but it hasn't really had any positive effect. My father also suffers from heartburn and was put on pump inhibitors which didn't help. It got so bad he had very little he could eat without excruciating pain. He started researching and found that often times the problem is not too much acid but not enough. He started taking betaine hcl and immediately his condition improved. He now eats whatever he wants without issue. So after hearing his story I order some of this stuff and have to say both my wife and I are feeling the improvement. A month and a half supply for both of us costs $39. We are taking a 520mg betaine hcl dose with 21mg of pepsin. I do find that this dose is too high for my meager breakfast, but it is perfect for lunch and dinner time. You can buy this in powder form and make your own pills to tailor a dose(which my father has done). If you have these issues and have tried antacids and they aren't working I highly recommend trying betaine hcl. If you aren't sure go on google or duckduckgo and search low gastric acid, heartburn, and symptoms. There are other more natural ways to up your stomach acid like bitters, apple cider vinegar, or lemon juice before meals. I prefer popping the pill as its tasteless and easy. Hope this helps someone else as much as it has helped us.

I had a terrible time with acid reflux, among the truly miserable ailments I have experienced. These would occur most often after a late dinner, big meal, often with beef, red wine, heavier foods. I learned to take Zantac after such meals, when I remembered to do so, an imperfect solution at best. I have not had any incidents in years, thank God. The cure involved giving up persistent, chronic gluttony. Once I got that under control, I noticed a number of positive developments. No acid reflux, no gout, weight loss (now about 80 lbs.), slept better, etc. There is no need to eat like a lumber jack unless you are one. This message has been edited. Where government moves in, community retreats, civil society disintegrates and our ability to control our own destiny atrophies. The result is: families under siege; war in the streets; unapologetic expropriation of property; the precipitous decline of the rule of law; the rapid rise of corruption; the loss of civility and the triumph of deceit. The result is a debased, debauched culture which finds moral depravity entertaining and virtue contemptible." - Justice Janice Rogers Brown

I use Nexium or the Costco substitute. It put my acid problems under control. It is taken daily and works after waiting 48 hrs. I'm now trying to take it every other day, waiting to see if acid problems resurface with the longer dose time, so far so good.

Diet worked for me. I don't mean going on a diet. I mean changing my diet. This message has been edited. Last edited by: r0gue,

This is my story as well. I took Pepcid for YEARS, eventually upping to the larger 20mg dose to keep heartburn under control, and it worked. Then last year I changed my diet and lost a lot of weight and when I ran out of Pepcid I decided to see if I could live without it. Turns out I can.
