I had an 8 track of her I used in the car on dates. It worked pretty good to set the mood.

As I recall she died from anorexia nervosa. I last saw her in Las Vegas and was shocked at her weight. At the time the illness wasn’t well understand but it has always puzzled me her brother didn’t intervene.

meh, I liked her voice but in that day and age I was much more into rock. She was OK but I don't find myself listening to her recordings today.

Heart problems are a side effect of the affliction and that is what actually killed her.
My wife struggled with depression and anorexia through her high school years. Weighed 59lbs as a senior. She will tell you that short of forced feeding no one but the person with the illness can decide to make themselves better.

And the very sad thing is that Karen Carpenter would have very little success in today's music market.
Back in the 70s and in a good portion of the 80s, music was driven by the lyrics and the story the song told. The music was written and sung by excellent voices that could musically express the totality of emotion in that song.
Today music has shifted from lyrics based to beat based where the beat, mostly through synthesized music, is the driving force in the song and the lyrics are much more monotone or only vary up or down by a few degrees or notes. Think of there being no need to have the octave range of someone like Julie Andrews.
As a result, you have someone, such as Beyonce, who is known for beat based music but if you ask someone what story her music told you'd be hard pressed to here with an answer and in a few years people won't remember any of her music but they well remember her.
I think a good example is Raindrop Keep Falling as a great lyric based song that would completely flop today, along with The Carpenters. The Captain and Tennille is another group.
